I even have a weird fan theory that Misery isn't actually Jenka's daughter, I mean they look nothing alike.
The theory is the first king, the same one that imprisoned Ballos, murdered her real mother and Jenka took her in as a foster mother. The statue of the angel on the Balcony depicts Misery's real mother. The death of her mother is what drives her to make the Demon Crown.
Some other fan theories of mine, and some things to think about.
-Sand Zone is the ruined remains of Ballos' home after he went insane with evil magic. That's why Jenka and the red flower seeds are there.
-You should technically be able to save both Curly and Professor Booster in the Labyrinth. Jenka's health jar should have no problem healing Curly, thus allowing Booster to take the Cure-All with no worries.
-The Igor look-a-like Mimiga on the Balcony is an enraged Jack. So I hope you didn't kill him. ;) Speaking of which, in Cave Story 3D some new sections are added to the game. However, one big mistake is the appearance of Rabils (enraged Mimiga) as enemies after beating Undead Core. With the core destroyed the effects of the red flower should be reversed according to Kazuma and Sue and Misery's transformations back to normal after the fight.
-The Red Ogre is the monster mentioned to have been fought off by Arthur.
Both Balrog and Misery do not want to Serve the Crown Bearer. Balrog gave his beloved jenka many chances, and still is hopeful, while Misery, being utterly betrayed by the person she risked her life to be with, became -petty, depressed, spiteful, "goth", detatched ect.-, as she says before her battle with you, she doesn't care about (ruling) the island at all and is only obeying the doctor.
So, I can't really point out an "evil" person here (though the closest is ... Getandafix? I forget his name), since the doctor has a superiority complex, Misery is hopeless, Balrog is afraid, and Ballos is both insane and inhabited/united by forces of darkness (ruled by hate, the red eye, the many faces/eyes that leak out of the remainder of his flesh during the final battle, being able to survive as a spirit). Even the first king who miserably used Misery was likely a balanced character-- but he only appears in the story as the ststue of a jerk and we never meet him.
I have unfinished fanart of young Jenka somewhere... but I can't it... same with some FINISHED fanart...
"Getandafix"? Are you talking about the king that imprisoned Ballos? He's never given a name, he's just refered to as "the King of the Island". Halder (the first Demon Crown user) isn't him because if I remember correctly it says Ballos killed the guy that imprisoned him, and the Demon Crown must have been made after he went insane.
I don't know if you're using mods like Jenka's Nightmare and Misery Story for reference, but they aren't canon.
The setting is definetly inspired by Studio Ghibli's castle in the sky, though, and I forum surfed in a few places where pixel accidentallly dropped bits of plot. I meant Halder when I said the closest one to being "just evil". Getandafi is an evil druid from another game...
She says she doesn't care about the island or anyone on it; she never mentions anything about wanting to rule the island herself. However she's obviously lying as she pretty much holds Sue at gunpoint to keep Quote from indirectly destroying it.
The only guesses I can make as to why she would have had Ballos make the crown in the first place would be to stop anyone else from trying to abuse Ballos' magic (though it backfired horribly). She could have used the crown to amass an army to prevent anyone else from getting on the island, but I think Ballos turned it into a bait and trap for powerhungry fools. Perhaps Misery and Balrog are actually meant to feign loyalty to the crown bearer and undo his/her plots from right under their nose everytime?
In short, Misery wants Quote to succeed and defeat the Doctor, but she doesn't want him to destroy the island in the process.
