short answer no, u can trade it in for stronger weapons later.

but honestly the machine gun is a really fun weapon that lets u fly pretty much.

short term the machine gun is one of the strongest guns u can get

I, personally would go for the Spur, but I suppose the machine gun has some great advantages.

its not as good as the other guns but its mo fun =P

if you play the game the same way it has no effect on the story line minus some dialog from hermit gunsmith and the first cave changing. my recomendation is to wait and get the spur, it can't lower in level and the longer you hold the stronger its lazer beam gets. you could also get the snake in the labrinth, it shoots through walls.

I would suggest getting the machine gun in the first playthrough because it's the most fun weapon in the game, play without a guide and get the bad ending (getting good ending without guide has p->0). Then look up how to get the good ending, play it again and get either the Snake or the Spur because they make the secret bonus level a bit easier.
