It doesn't have the same retroaesthetics but Ori is another amazing sidescroller. Visuals are beautiful and the animations are smooth, controls are tight (tighter than Cave Story, even), and music is among the best game soundtracks ever.

Meteroidvania games of any kind will, in most cases, be on par with CS.

Ori was mentioned above. Dust: An Elysian Tail was also a good metriodvania on steam.

If you never played it, the game that earned the genre its name: Castlevania Symphony of the Night. Though its not on steam.

I think all games mentioned above are really not similar to Cave Story at all. I don't know about Ori though, I've never played it.

I second Dust: An Elysian Tail. It's one of the best games that I have ever played. Good story, tight controls, fun-over-the-top abilities, and beautiful graphics. (One of the only games that I have 100% achievements) Def pick it up, if you want to wishlist it, it goes 75% off quite frequently.:fhappy:

AxiomVerge Is a great Metroid-Vania game that hit Steam recently. Man... It's basically a love-letter to Metroid! (I haven’t ever seen it on sale) It's a must for any fan of the genre. It's the game I have been waiting on since Super Metroid, on SNES... (I guess Fusion was okay..) :happymeat:

La-Mulana, is somewhat similar. It got it's start as a free Indie like CaveStory. It is more Castlevania than Metroid, tough, but very good. (I have seen it 66% off rarely, holliday sales I believe)

Probly my fave genre of game, I will let you know if I think of some others and check back to see if anyone else has offered up.

And metroid?

definitely recommend risk of rain. While different in terms of being a roguelike over progression, how it plays is similar enough to satisfy, and is better if you want a quick 30-60 minute session of platforming rather then wanting to continue in your massive cave story playthrough. Axiom verge is another good one that feels similar to cave story in multiple ways. Overal, it is entirely up to the individual person and their views, but that's just my 2 cents.

Nobody here has mentioned Kero Blaster? The other game from this developer??

I also recently found out about Axiom Verge. I'm going to buy it eventually, it looks like it could be as good as CS.

I've never heard of Kero Blaster. I will check it out. And yes. Spelunky is a tough platformer, ( I have put many frustrated hours into it) but it isnt story driven like CaveStory. :snake:
Pretty much any 2D Metroid game... since judging by the heart tank music and the fact that the last name of the main family in the game is Sakamoto, Metroid seems to be the main inspiration.
