FYI: Nicalis abandoned Cave Story+ For Steam

Despite a different version of a game by the same name with far more features dropping on Switch, this game hasn't changed in 6ish years.

Nicalis was outed a few years ago as a bad company with an awful person leading it, so anyone asking for new features is wasting their time. I highly recommend downloading the original version on the cavestory.org website if you want the definitive experience.

Perhaps him and his company is as you say, but that is subjective opinion.

The bottom line is, imo, CS+ is a great alternative version for the game, if not superior. The additional content and features that are present make it more than worth it. Plus... achievements! It is fair to assume no new features will be added on this version.

It's also fairly moddable. I'd recommend to anyone who does play it to consider tracking down the original's translation and playing CS+ with the old transcript as imo it's a lot better than this re-translation.

If it weren't abandoned I'd be in agreement. But there are bugs in this version that haven't been fixed that I first saw in high school (I'm 25 now).

For the amount of money Nicalis makes, they should put more effort into supporting their existing products. Especially ones as important to gaming as Cave Story.

This was my first intro into the Cave Story universe and I loved it. It was only after beating it (and sadly not the true ending yet) that I read stuff like this about how it might be an outdated version or something. I might try that other version that is said to be a better translation after I get the true ending on this one.

I do agree that it's disappointing the bugs that are present haven't been fixed. Though the only real bugs I've noticed that bother me are one achievement didn't work without modifications and for some reason it crashes after doing a bonus trial or whatever those things are. Fortunately I only play the main story.

The true ending achievement was bugged for the longest time but it was fixed sometime between 2019 and 2020, I believe. I remember using SAM to remove the achievement from my account just so I could obtain it legally after that.

Try the rust port. It has a 60fps and supports widescreen. And most importantly it's free.

It has a more advanced engine with widescreen support, modern rendering effects, and other stuff. I think it's dumb to call the Switch and PC version both Cave Story+ because they're both quite obviously very different iterations of Cave Story.

If you want a version comparable to the Switch version on PC I'd recommend the Cave Story Rust port.

Higher resolution textures, remastered soundtrack with the option of still using the older sound track, and a different (worse) translation that can be patched if you hunt down the original genesis translation and replace the right file. More game modes, though finishing one on steam causes the game to crash. The achievements are fun to get too.

You bet! The cool thing with the doukutsu-rs (Cave Story rust port) is that its a drag and drop solution.

You can download the freeware version and then follow the instructions in the GitHub page to get the enhanced version on your computer. The Rust version also has a 50/60FPS toggle. 50FPS to imitate the freeware version, 60FPS for the Cave Story+ version.
