Open source port supports wide-screen while Cave Story+ does not
Come on Nicalis, update the game already, please.

NXEngine-evo port has native 16:9 widescreen support while Cave Story+ still stucks with 4:3 aspect ratio. Compare yourself:

Where are the windows binaries for 1.0.0.6 ?
And that russian website looks shady as hell

I could not find any binary for 1.0.0.6; the last version which has binaries is 1.0.0.4. I compiled 1.0.0.6 from nxengine-evo of isage on GNU/Linux. shanfl's and nucular's forks seems to have Windows referances if you are interested.

https://github.com/shanfl/nxengine-evo
https://github.com/nucular/nxengine-evo

As I have just checked, 1.0.0.4 binaries from the EXL (Russian developer) do not support native widescreen. Here is the GitHub page of that Russian dev; I do not speak Russian, so I cannot say whether the site is shady, or not.

https://github.com/EXL/NXEngine

Edit: isage's nxengine-evo refers EXL's NXEngine for widescreen support. So, if you compile EXL's NXEngine for Windows, you should be able to have native widescreen.

Is there a more simple way to play this port version without compiling?

If you are a Linux user, there you go;

Do not forget to install libstdc++6, libstdc++6:i386, libstdc++5, libstdc++5:i386, libstdc++-5-dev packages.

Cave Story is a game that I will run every now and then when I get a new device. Look forward to information on how to run this on ultrawide screen. Thanks!

Better play the open source remake. Go for stable builds and use Steam version data.

Meaning you pay for the same damn game multiple times, not to mention it was originally freeware to begin with. New generation of gamers, sigh...

Also, the Switch version has a extra music "style" option, and the new graphics sprites are improved.

Also, there is multiplayer / coop on the Switch version... they just gave up and forgot about this version, or maybe they want to release a new version and makes us pay again

Edit:

There is also this re-implementation of the Cave Story (Doukutsu Monogatari) engine written in Rust: https://github.com/doukutsu-rs/doukutsu-rs?tab=readme-ov-file
