I was a bit confused by this at first too, it's a lot simpler than it appears. Try counting how many moves you are allowed to make and then look at the numbers again.

You aren't making full lines, you are hitting where each point is, so for 1 you'd do where it starts and where it ends and not the spaces between. All of the other numbers are pointed to show where you need to click to form the number.

As an additional hint: Think in brushstrokes.

The '8' is the character that is most likely to get messed up since it is a total of 7 inputs I think. Make sure to "finish" the last stroke.
