I understand, that turning into the wind would be the safest way to land or launch an aircraft even in this day. RTW3 is a game however and if there is an ability for the carrier (with catapults and/or angled flight deck) to allow not turning into wind to launch or land aircrafts, then this thing should work as intended or have a description changed (if this works differently) to specify this is impossible. A special toggle can even be added (for carrier squadrons) that explicitly forbids to turn into wind provided the catapults are installed. This would be useful when said squadron needs to get away from encroaching hostiles or just plain sail where you tell it to.
It is typical situation for me - I tell my carriers to sail to a specific location. They start heading that way but as soon as aircraft operations begin, they always turn into wind to send off planes. That would a correct decision since CAP is needed to protect themselves (and ships nearby) from hostile air attacks plus searching for enemy strike force plus send off air strikes. And if there is an ability that allows them to do so while sailing where I tell them to, I would like to use it. And if it cannot be used I would like the game to tell my why it cannot be used and maybe stating somwhere that this can't be done
Secondly, read the manual, it is pretty clear that catapults only enable two kinds of flight ops without turning into the wind: lauch CAP and lauch scout missions. Note that recovering aircraft isn't in there (catapults are irrelevant to landing planes!) and launching strikes isn't either.
Oh, it is specifically mentioned in the manual? I must have missed it then. And yes, I was sending airstrikes. I will recheck the manual, thanks.
