Oxygen fuelled torpedos, what do they do?
Hello, a question: what effect does it make to use oxygen-fuelled torpedos? The manual describes them as "give considerably better performance at the risk of more devastating torpedo explosions if tubes are hit"; the risk of more devastating explosions is pretty self-explanatory but, "considerably better performance", what does it mean by that exactly?

They are like the Japanese Long Lance torpedo. Extremely long range but if they get hit will cause significantly more damage to the ship that is carrying them.

Just long range? Nothing more? I thought that for example they would carry a bigger puch.

It's the same warhead, just the fuel is different.

Normal torpedoes use compressed air as fuel, which is safer but significantly less powerful fuel source. Pure oxygen allows a torpedo to run longer, but is a lot more explosive compared to normal air. A lot of nations in ww1-2 were experimenting with pure oxygen torpedoes but most of them were cancelled due to safety concerns.

Ok, undertood. Well then, by how much do they extend the torpedo's range? The range as far as I'm aware only shows for standard torpedos, right? Also, in which ship types would oxygen fuelled torpedos be more effective (would it make sense to have oxygen torpedos for my torpedo aircraft for example)?

I'd generally say dds and maybe cls. They are probably doomed if they are getting shot at anyway.

But then I don't really use them much. IIRC the range is almost doubled with oxygen but it's still unlikely to hit a target at such ranges.

Maybe if you went crazy with it and made a Kitakami style cruiser with maxed torpedo tubes it would be worth it just to vomit torpedoes all over the enemy line. With that many torps SOMETHING is bound to hit.

Maybe I should try that...
