LAN not working - if this is the primary reason you want the game...WAIT
My Wife and I each bought a steam copy of TL2, installed and fired up the game. Everything worked great. Until we tried to play LAN - which is the whole reason we purchased the game. She is on Vista and I have Win 7. That's the only thing that I can't change (without dropping some $$). We tried disabling the firewalls on both computers, disabling MSE, each of us tried hosting. I tried with TWO different routers, and with a damn crossover cable and fixed IP addresses. I could, in every network setup, ping one computer from the other.

So we set up the runic accounts and I tried hosting a game and had her join - wow - we could actually see the server from the other computer! But the we got "connection failure" errors when we tried to join. I read the post on changing the UDPORT number in the local_setting.txt file (NOT in the same place that runic's help post talks about, its in "My Documents\My Games\Runic Games\Torchlight 2"). I set UDPORT to 1025 and set hers to 1026 - BOOM we could play on the internet. OK neato - then we hit the "megalag" problem. The game sync lasts for between 2 and 15 min but eventually one of us sees the other just frozen on the screen and we have to rejoin.

Upshot is, as far as I can tell, LAN on the steam version seems busted. The internet option isn't even a temp fix at this point.

Very frustrating - its a fun game after all.

It's Vista.
It's Vista.
It's Vista.
It's Vista, seriously.

Install Windows 7 on her computer. Using Vista is asking for problems. I was never able to get Vista to do ICS with Windows 7 despite it being theoretically supported, for example. There was never a reason, it just didn't work until I installed 7 on the second computer.

LAN works perfectly for my wife and I and we both use the Steam version.

It is most likely down to the fact that you are running on 2 separate operating systems. There is nothing wrong with the games LAN.

Not Vista's fault. Just did a clean install of Win 7 on the Vista PC - still no go. Turning off firewall, MSE didn't help. Updating drivers...didn't help. Awesome.

It is installed on her computer (see above). Clean install earlier.

This thread confirms it's not necessarily the OS - it's something else - probably which adapter the game is grabbing. The game is now patching so I may never know but once its up I will try again with all adapters disabled except the ones connected to the router.

It works - I'll never know if it was the patch or the disabling of unused adapters but it works. Before the patch (and disabling of all adapters but wireless) - no go. Patch and disable all adapters except wireless - good to go. finally. HTH someone else.

Have you tried tunngle? My friend and I tried LAN and it didn't work until we got to Hamachi

worked fine for me, hamachi also worked.

maybe you have a port blocked.

just reboot vista a few times and check the ports as an experiment.. Vista had a strange habit of using random ports and closing them with every reboot.

TL2 seems to bind to the first network device. You can try reordering your network devices. Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings > Press ALT Key > Advanced > Advanced Settings - Move the currently connected device to the top of the list. This is a common problem with LAN Games. (If this solution was mentioned previously I am sorry for repeating, I didn't read all the answers. TL2 reminds me of D2 and we used to have a similar issue there before it was patched)

Perfect - many thanks R3D!! Our two Win7 machines can now see each other on the wireless LAN now that the adapters have been reshuffled to the top of the list. TL2 coop works - and my 9yr old son will be a very happy boy. :)
