The standard pets are all the same aside from how they look. If you're wanting the "best" pet then it depends what stats you want it to have more of.

=====================================================================
Jackalbeast: Increases poison armor by ~100% and grants a small amount of poison damage.

Mimic: +25% physical armor +66% elemental armor +50% hp + 33% damage (base)

Warbeast: Increases base average damage by ~85%.

Molebeast: Grants chance to stun enemies.

Spider: Grants immobilizing web attack.

Swampflyer: ??

Torso: +20% damage +60% elemental +25% hp (base), shreds armor

Armored Crab Warrior: +100% physical armor, +100% elemental armor (base)

The Giant Warsnout is easy to fish up early in the game so that's what I usually use. The Mimic is really nice too, but the sounds it makes can become annoying after a couple hours.

Pet damage is a joke. so the "best" comes form utility.
Personally am a fan of the swamp flyer For its natural silence. i then fill it with silence spells and then i rarely deal with pesky trash spells.
other cool thing with pets, give them loads of summon spells.
I only know 3
crab is tanky as hell
wolf is the one that does more damage
molebeast stuns rnaodm targets
mimic pet got some attack and some def
actually there is differences, well as far i can tell i have used the cat, wolf, bulldog, the dragon thing and the bird; some of them are sightly faster than others, the bird is the fastes because can fly and reach some places ground pets cant, the dragon thing is the only one i have seen jumping from stairs, balconies and other higher grounds to attack whatever comes to his sight. there is any other differences?
No, pets are all the same except for the fish transformations. The default ones are just skins, they all have the same stats and speed including the bird, which looks like it flies but it still has to move around just like all of the others. Leaping down is possible to everyone, it's just a veeery sensitive map-reliant thing that you might not see much.

For the defaults, I always pick the panda because that one is sorta better simply because the panda is by far the most visible skin. It's big and black and white, it's super easy to spot where it is on the screen compared to some other ones.

well everyone says the same crap but the dragon thingy jumps every single time and the others just walk down the stairs/downhill

Warbeast has nearly double the base damage, so I go with that.

Pet damage is far from a 'joke', used a Giant Warsnout on my pet in Act 1 and now at level 40 he hits for 1k noncrit in Elite mode, and he only has 1 unique equipped (a tag). The best pet IMO is the Torso because it's a tank with armor shredding. You basically get the best of the mimic's defensiveness with a debuff that ultimately gives it only slightly less offensiveness than the Warsnout. But it's also EXTREMELY hard to find. I've done about 300 angles on this account so far and notta single Bonefish yet... let alone a Giant Bonefish.. rip ;_;

I love this lil guy man he absolutely reks ♥♥♥♥, especially when I have stone pact down+elemental protection+blade pact up. GG

Pet damage becomes powerful if equipped with Frost Spells levels 3, 4, 5, and 6...

ranges from 3,000 damage to 50,000.

Also look for blue (not gold) Tags and Collars that give 30% shield break and 30% critical chance or higher.

Optionally find, buy or enchant gear that gives % bonus to Pet and Minion Damage.

The joke comment is fairly accurate. It takes so much optimization to make a pet adequate, you'd have far better results putting the same level of effort into almost anything else.
