and even then you'll probably get a different challenge, and not the one you died in.
don't worry, though - they are all very rewarding.
just start a new LAN game and select "reroll world" to reset the map, then continue as usual.
but before you do, be sure to find that chest and grab the loot. it's there somewhere :)
If I re-roll world will I be able to exit and return to single player mode?
And the golden chest do have to be opened before leaving the area, otherwise they disappear?
if you reset the map, there will be a new chest and you'll need to find the key again.
also, make sure you do all the map-specific mini-quests before the reroll, so you can do them again after the reroll and get some free exp :)
there are a number of ways to reroll your Single Player world. the simplest is to join someone else's game online, and later go back to Single Player. the bit more tricky one, is to create a LAN or Internet game and select "reroll world" in the game options - then go back to Single Player.
also, I read somewhere that Runic added an "areas reroll after being inactive" feature in one of the latest patches - so yes, you can just exit the area and re-enter a few minutes later.
not sure if that is true for Single Player, though.
as for the Phase Beast: Overworld (large outdoor) areas have a high chance to spawn a Phase Beast, but the challenges behind the portal are numerous and random - so your chance to get EXACTLY the one challenge you died in, are close to 0.
but like I said you have nothing to worry about - because all are very rewarding.
And you can go back to singleplayer once you exit LAN. Also, when you're doing a LAN game and you hit the save button and then exit to continue with the singleplayer, then the singleplayer game will got the world you created in the LAN game, which is usefull if you used a portal scroll. The downside of a portal scroll is that once you used it the portal will stay, even if you go back through the portal you created. In the first torchlight it was an one time thing.
As for the reroll area after being inactive; happens with singleplayer too yes, but it seems to happen once you have shifted into a next area and haven't visit the other area for a while.
Phase Beast will always be available in the main overland areas. So that means in Act I that will be the Temple Steppes and Frosted Hills. Those pass areas that connect those areas to the Enclave, like the path of the honored death and crows pass will never have a phase beast. And yes, phase beast is often random, although in the Ossean Wastes (act II) it is often that nasty champion tars challenge. It seems also to matter where the phase beast will spawn which kind of challenge you got. Sometimes it will be not really a challenge and it's just killing enemies on your path.Last time when i killed a phase beast in the salt barrens, in the ships graveyard, it was just killing undead pirates and a few tu'tura. And there is a new one which throws you into a maze. The rewards will also vary. One challenge is more rewarding then the other. The tougher it is, the more rewarding it will be.
Very enjoyable none-the-less.
