[Help needed] Pleae explain levelling up, equipping/combining items, pets, combat etc
Hi guys, I'm quite the noob in playing games similar to Torchlight 2. Some questions (since the game really doesn't have a tutorial to help a complete newbie to the genre like me):

1) What do pets do? Do they ever die? Do they get equippable items?

2) Does levelling up get harder? How come there are two type of stats you can increase when you level up? (individual and secondary attack stat).

3) For the secondary attack stat, how come I can only equip one at a time?

4) If I am a melee character, am I always gonna be disadvantaged in melee battles (especially against the big bosses)?

5) Do I need to buy from shop, or drops/loot is enough?

6) Can my character switch between weapons on the fly in combat? What about secondary attacks?

7) Combat seems very unstrategic and just "get in there and kill the bad guys" to me. What am I doing wrong?

8) Is it important to equip items? How do I know which is the best?

9) Does it make sense to play this alone? If I do choose to play only co-op, do enemies increase with number of players?

10) If I use potions from time to time, do I suck or is it normal? And do you find more potions if you use up more of em?

Thanks!

Carry gear go shopping. No they don't they just Flee and get wounded. Collars and tags

2) Does levelling up get harder? How come there are two type of stats you can increase when you level up? (individual and secondary attack stat).

Yes it does get harder on ng modes.Fame and experience just gain you skill levels 100 on levels, 50 on fame 150 total

3) For the secondary attack stat, how come I can only equip one at a time?
?

4) If I am a melee character, am I always gonna be disadvantaged in melee battles (especially against the big bosses)?

No engineers laugh at many bosses so do many other well constructed classes.

5) Do I need to buy from shop, or drops/loot is enough?

Drops are good enough gambling can get good loot too. You can also transmute your spare uniques sets skulls etc to make a random gem unique etc.

6) Can my character switch between weapons on the fly in combat? What about secondary attacks?

Yes. Secondary by that you mean such as a samandow skull that adds dmg to secondary targets?

7) Combat seems very unstrategic and just "get in there and kill the bad guys" to me. What am I doing wrong?

Maybe not playing a char suited to your playstyle try hardcore to find the glove that fits.

8) Is it important to equip items? How do I know which is the best?

Press j and check your arcane stats for dmg stats.

9) Does it make sense to play this alone? If I do choose to play only co-op, do enemies increase with number of players?

You can play it alone sure. But if you can play with a pal or get in regular multi game session it is even better.

Thanks!

Now engineer. I also played the shooter and the magist. I preferred a more direct approach.

I'll avoid going into detail so this does not take over an hour to write out.

1 - Pets are mostly for utility and not damage dealing. Your pet will never die, but if it reaches critically low health it will run around aimlessly until you either give it a potion or it regenrates a little health after a few seconds. There are 3 equipment slots for the pet you can view by opening the pet tab with "P".

2 - Leveling does not get "harder" but there are some higher level enemies that need to be dealt with differently than some others. The stat points you get 5 of per level are used to increase your overall stat pool whereas the skill points you get 1 of per level.. well, they go into increasing your skills.

3 - I am unsure what you mean by secondary attack stat, do you mean the attack that is bound by default to right click?

4 - No. Both melee and ranged are perfectly able to wreck entire rooms quickly and easily when played well.

5 - The only thing you really NEED to buy from the shops in my opinion are health and mana potions if you're playing on elite. The vendor does sell nice blue items from time to time though.

6 - Yes. There is a weapon swap feature so you can have two sets of weapons "equipped" at once but only have one set out. Assuming you mean skills as the secondary attacks, you can use them whenever as long as you have the proper item in hand. (Some attacks are limited to cannons only or 2 handers only ...)

7 - If you feel it's too facerolly then play on a higher difficulty. If normal elite still doesn't cut it, play hardcore mode.

8 - It's a loot-based game, so having items equipped is a must. Any stats that boost your survivability or damage output are most desired. Stats like increased gold drop are usually bad and should not be a sought after stat.

9 - Personal preference. I play alone most of the time but only because not a lot of people play hardcore mode.

10 - Gobbling potions is percectly normal and early on is about the only way to get your health back quickly. Potions just drop randomly so just buy more if you're running out.

1. Your pet cannot die but it can run out of health. When that happens, it will temporarily flee from battle, which could be a problem for you because your pet can attack mobs with you. Your pet's health and magic meter for their skill spells you can give them are in the upper left corner. You can also feed your pet potions and they can equip a few items like et tags that have a variety of abilities, some of which can buff your own or give you health regeneration.
Your pet can also be sent to town to sell all of its inventory items for you and buy basic potions.

2. Leveling up does take more time later in the game. However, there are two types of leveling you earn, basic leveling up from agining enough experience and prestiege, which is gained from defeating certain bosses and completing quests. When you earn enough prestiege you gain one free skill point.

3. Your secondary attack is your other main mouse move, but you can also slot potions and skills into the skill bar at the bottom of the screen by left clicking on the slot and then clicking on the skill/item you want to put there. The skills are used by the coresponding number keys.

4. While each class does play differently (especially some modded classes), you are not disadvantaged by using a melee character. For example, the DPS class the Berzerker has a skill that summons a shadow wolf that attacks enemies, so even if you are primarily a melee class you can use ranged skills. In addition, any class can pretty much use any weapon, though some classes have preferences towards specific weapon types and their skills may require them to be used. For example, to use some of the Engineer's skills (who is the tank/support class) you must have a shotgun or greathammer equipped. You do, hewever, have two weapon slots that you can switch between. I personally like to have a melee weapon in the first slot and a ranged weapon in the second slot.

5. In my experiences usually loot that you gain from drops and mobs is good enough, though from time to time some shops may have better gear or spell scrolls that you would want to pick up, like a healing scroll for example. I would check on what shops offer from time to time, though I think it is a personal preference to do so. In addition, mods like Synergies increase the game's difficulty but also rebalance the skill trees and give you better loot and new monsters to fight. It's an excellent mod once you get used to the game.

6. Yes, you can switch between weapon slots, I believe with the W key by default since the game is mouse driven. They can use the skills and secondary attacks for that weapon type, so if you switch from a melee to a ranged weapon it will also switch to let you use any ranged skills you have specced into.

7. Nope, that's pretty much it. But the combat is really good because everything explodes :D!

8.Yes, items are important to equip and you can mouse over them to see their properites. Magic find is an important property because it increases the chance that rarer items will drop. Gold find increases gold drops so you can earn more money.

9. I would perosnally play it alone though you can play it in co op, though the server browser has a history of being finicky with connections. The number of players does increase the nearby monster count and the amount of loot you can earn, and each player gets their own loot so you don't have to scramble and argue over it.

10. It is normal to use potions, and some potions can do more things than just health and mana regeneration. I do not believe you necessarily find more potions automat.ically if you use more, but your pet can buy them for you and they aren't very expensive. As far as iI'm aware your pet will also use some of any junk you give ti to pay ofr the items as well.

About No. 3, I mean the skills points assigned to secondary attacks. Do I only get to equip one skill at a time?
rossw23 Jan 11, 2014 @ 8:10pm
about no 3 etc your skills are equiped to the number keys above qwerty but you equip 1 to the right click although you still can cast with the numbers
himmatsj Jan 11, 2014 @ 8:12pm
So, talking about battle strategy. When up against a boss or a monster of high level, do you usually attack with range than switch weapons to deal special damage and back again? Or just with range/melee all the while?
rossw23 Jan 11, 2014 @ 8:18pm
it depends on ur class i cant remenber the names know but the guy that uses bows guns is obviously the ranged attack he stays behind his pet and uses the better to absorb damage whilst you use glave throw (spell) or if your the knight (not correct name) you go use your melee attack because you can take more damage but git more out the others i neva played but once u know what the class is ment to do it easier. also try multiplayer and speak to people generally a good community with people who will help u out
himmatsj Jan 11, 2014 @ 8:26pm
So different classes have different base HP and DMG output?
rossw23 Jan 11, 2014 @ 8:32pm

Yeah, sorry for keeping you up. The sloppy writing kinda gave it away.
