For Embermages, Focus is pretty much the only stat there is, aside from Vit for extra shield block chance if you want to split a little of it.
But don't say "ice mage". There's literally no reason to ever make a character focusing on one tree. Particular skills yes, but say "this tree" and you're doing it wrong. It's very easy to find stuff that works very well together that are on different trees, and you always have stuff useful for everyone that are scattered across the trees. It's not even possible to max one entire tree even if you never put points in the other ones.
Off the top of my head, these are the general good builds you can do with an Embermage:
- Prismatic Bolt + Frost Wave + Hailstorm, stack +% Cast Speed as much as possible (equip wand+shield)
(Elemental Boon, Firestorm and Staff Mastery don't actually help PrismBolt much)
- +%Fire Embermage with Blazing Pillar + Infernal Collapse + Firestorm (equip wand+shield)
- Wand Chaos Embermage with Magma Spear and Shockbolts, maybe Icy Bolts too, and don't take Magma Mace (equip wand+shield. Do not dual-wield wands, the skills apply Wand Chaos better than that, do take a shield)
- +%Electric Shocking Orb + Hailstorm + Thunder Locus Embermage with two-handed weapons with inherent knockback or a +Knockback gem for Shocking Orb, needs level 42 to learn Shocking Orb and more for its important tier upgrades
For just being an Embermage, you should:
- Have 1 point in every Brand you're not using.
- Have Frost Phase, even if at only 1 point. This is the best teleport skill in the game. It's nicer to use if you put it in the hotkey and then change its key to spacebar so you push spacebar to teleport.
- Have at least some 3 or 4 points in Elemental Attunement for the status extension. If you're not doing a Prismatic Bolt build which already does all elemental status effects, you can choose to max Elemental Attunement so it'll have some chance of causing all elemental status effects you're not doing.
- Have Ice Prison, even if only at 1 point. More is good but 1 is mandatory for everyone, you can wall up a path and still shoot through it.
- Always consider the Frozen Fate passive because it works from any kill of yours.
And Staff Mastery plain sucks.
