"Firewall detected" and "Duplicate login" errors.

Has anyone found a fix yet?
I forced my friend to buy the game but we can't play together because of those two errors. Last night it was the firewall issue and now I can't even login the runic games server. Wtf.
Funnily enough I don't see these issues mentioned in the pinned thread of "Common problems."

TL2 seems to bind to the first network device. You can try reordering your network devices. For anyone else running into this issue, Runic support was able to offer this solution:

Every one playing needs to do this.

1. Go to Documents > my games > runic games > torchlight 2

2. Look for local_settings.txt and open

3. Next, find LOBBYHOST:lobby.runicgames.com

4. Please change lobby.runicgames.com to the following: localhost

5. Save the file

After following the above steps, I was able to succesfully launch a LAN game using the modlauncher without an internet connection. However, Runic support also suggested that localhost needs to be changed back to lobby.runicgames.com or else there will be problems when trying to join online multiplayer games. Hope this helps!

Note: you still want to make sure that the mod order, mod list, and Language settings are all the same, or this won't work.

I think I need a solution for the duplicate error first since I'm not even able to login anymore. I had no problem just a few hours ago. Is this game/server broken or what?

It's a common and prevalent issue that has plagued TL2 from the beginning. It usually resolves after a day. HiFive compiled some info in another Discussion:

Phanjam from Discord usually recommended using another Email to make another Runic Account to log-in when this happens.

You may be right about the login issue resolving itself because I was finally able to log in late in the night. Though it didn't help much as I still couldn't join the internet room. :/
Can you just copy/paste only the main suggestions regarding the firewall issue? There are so many threads I'm confused.
BTW are you able to play coop on the internet?
Just FYI, we just want to play the game together online via the Internet and not LAN.
If VPN (given in the Hamachi alternatives) helps this and make it seem like we are playing on LAN and it works then its well and good. I'm saying this for clarity's sake because some of the posts have "LAN" and we are not playing on LAN.
I'm playing on a laptop so I don't know anything about the router part either.

Alright, some update:
Good news- I tried the Radmin VPN and it worked but I faced disconnection problem. I'm not sure if this is because of the VPN or my internet issues.
Bad news- It wiped out my entire progress. Meaning all saved games disappeared.
The SVB files are still in the savegame folder so I don't know what's wrong.
Also I noticed something. There was no character resumption as in "Load, Resume, New Game" after I used the Radmin VPN. I got only "New Game."
This game was so good but now seems to be in the gutter.

I'm curious if it's an issue with Radmin - if this could be solved wirh Hamachi or other alternatives. If the save files are still present then the characters are there - seems the Vpn is keeping the files from uploading onto the game hence the lack of characters and lack of options other than 'New Game'.

Restart doesn't help.
Its also strange that the game has a login (to Runic server) option for Internet play but doesn't back up your saved files. I thought I would be able to restore them from the server but there was no option to do it.

Interesting. Every .svb character save file has a .restore file that can be renamed to .svb and the Settings.txt files can be deleted both in the Torchlight 2 and Save Folders.

That's what I thought but even the .restore files were also missing for some of the characters. And for those with .restore files I tried the renaming method but it didn't work.
