DUPLICATE LOGIN PROBLEM
I was playing online when my buddy mysteriously vanished from the game. He said he saw a Steam notification that I had just started playing the game at that exact moment, so it looks like the Steam network had a brain fart. Anyway, I left the game and tried to log in again. The Runic lobby keeps saying "Duplicate Login." Can't find any help elsewhere.

- Tried restarting the game. No luck.
- Tried restarting Steam. No luck.
- Tried restarting my entire PC, router, and AP. Big fat negative on the success factor.
- Tried changing my password on the Runic website. That didn't help.
- Looked in the "common Problems" thread here, nothing about this problem was mentioned.
- Tried looking for help on their support forum. Keep getting "403: FORBIDDEN" from Cloudflare and the primary site returns a DNS error, so it just doesn't exist any more. Nice to know these jackwagons are still selling a game they never really finished the net code for in the first place and no longer even support, but that's beside the point.

Anyway, I actually like this game and after all the crap I did to make this thing work online, I'd like to play it... online. Anyone know how to get past the "Duplicate Login" error?

It's an old annoying issue that requires the player to wait most of a day (or however long it takes for the session to log itself out) to be able to log back in.
Here's two discussions that try to work around the issue:

Thanks for the reply. I had jokingly told my buddy that we needed to get Hamachi or something like it, just to circumvent the login servers. Might do that now.

I wish Steam had some kind of rule that requires unsupported games to have great big disclaimers on the store page saying "THIS GAME IS NO LONGER SUPPORTED BY ITS DEVELOPER." Something along those lines, just so people know that if the run into issues, they're basically screwed.

Question: If Runic no longer exists, who the hell is getting the money when people buy their old games?

At some point, every developer of a non-MMO decides the game is a finished product, and they move on to other projects. Often, the game is eventually sold to a larger company. The game wouldn't be on Steam if it wasn't owned by some entity making money off of the sales and paying Steam to list the game.

Many small developers dream of the day when they might get a big cash offer for their games. The larger companies that purchased the game usually aren't looking to continue development of the game, or even make repairs. I guess they don't feel it's worth the investment. If the game works well enough for most people to play it, that is all that matters. At that point, It is the gaming community that makes fixes to any leftover issues, or new issues that arise from new versions of computer operating systems, such as Windows. I certainly wish more developers would enable the Steam workshop for any games they put on Steam, and I am extremely grateful for the gamers/programmers that create mods and fixes for my favorite games.

The Radmin / Hamachi with Lan option is definitely recommended to try.

Here's a page of advice received from players over the years on how to set-up the Lan:

The amount of "support" for Multiplayer connection quality has definitely been a joke.

Agreed. Steam doesn't seem to bother writing additional notes especially with older games on the current state of their functions such as Multiplayer. At the very least they could note that there's issues present if nothing else. That would inform players to prepare for work-arounds after purchase.

To answer your question more exactly on who got the owner rights on this franchise:

There's TL:Infinite's owner of XD fulfilling the role of Publisher and Developer however the "Torchlight Trilogy" is separately owned by Embracer Group's Gearbox.

There's been no announcements that Torchlight 1,2, or 3 would get updates after their unrelated Console Ports were completed. The last update for Pc versions of TL2 was a language patch from 2017 and that was after four years of no patches since 2013:

The Torchlight franchise in contrast has been tossed through Publisher hands and various Studios to the point where it is now split between two legal products.
It's a mess on the official side of business for Torchlight.

From Perfect World over Runic to Echtra then split between XD and Embracer Group; I'm grateful that Torchlight at least avoided the fate of Gigantic also under Perfect World.
