unable to get local appdata folder
so my fiancee and I were about to play some torchlight 2, and she got this error message on the pc. My version runs fine on my laptop.
We've tried using a different windows profile. Reinstalling it. Uninstalling it with REVO uninstaller. Going to the "my games" folder and deleting the runic folder. It just makes a new one and still gives the error. I can't find any solutions online other than "make a new windows profile" which isn't really a real fix and from like one post 6 years ago. It seems to be a rare problem, but one we can't fix. Any ideas?

Did you give the game administration rights?

Zectifin Mar 17, 2019 @ 2:10pm
someone suggested that and I gave both the .exe and the modlauncher admin rights. was able to launch it once without mods, but now I can't get it to launch with or without mods at all, same error message.

Did you give it permanent admin rights or temporary? Is something keeping the admin rights from being permanent.

I just checked that checkbox that gives it admin rights under compatibility.

so if i run the .exe the game boots, but if I run the modlauncher.exe or through steam I get the error (which means I'm unable to load it with mods which was the purpose of us playing it again.)

It seems like your issue is different from the error I've been getting, but just in case it's related, see my recent post about "Cannot Play Mods".

Try this:

I got it. If you type that is, it'll tell you access denied. Unless you go to:

Control Panel > Folder Options > View > Show Hidden Files and Folders.

Then you can actually see the folder when you go into C\Users\username

Apparently it's an issue with "Folder Redirection".

The most common cause of this issue is that Torchlight II has been installed on a machine which is intermittently connected to a domain with enforced folder redirection (e.g., a laptop or a machine on a corporate VPN). When the game was installed, files were added to Documents\My Games, but because of the redirection those files are located on a server which may now be inaccessible.

Everywhere I search it always brings up this issue with domains and servers for users.

Yeah, we eventually did a windows 10 reset. It's working now.

sorry for the necrobump but just in case for others out there who still might encounter this issue..
on my end, it was windows defender's Controlled Folder Access. i had to allow torchlight2.exe and modlauncher.exe through controlled folder access and had the issue resolved. ;)

I already thanked you on another thread where you posted the same thing, but I'll thank you again. This comment has been added to my database of TL2 problems/fixes. :steamhappy:

Fixed this on mine, i had a work email on my computer and allowed the organisation to control my device, i believe that enforces some of the companys group policies, to fix this search for "manage your account" in Windows, go to "access work or schools" and remove any work emails, you can add them back later and unselect "allow this organisation to control this device". worked for me 100%.
