How important are fish? Should I have a fish on my pet at all times? Special times (dungeons). Is there a ranking for fish effectiveness?

The best fish I've found come from Secret fishing spots. Those are the only ones I fish at after level 10 or so. They seem to drop the most items, but Promising fishing spots will sometimes drop low level gear or pet equipment as well.
If you feed fish to your pets often, then just fish at any of them as often as it takes to keep your inventory stocked.

Fish can help very early on when playing on the hardest difficulty. Otherwise there is no need to bother with them.

I just like to fish, so I stop by every fishing hole I find. The details will usually tell you what the fish does if you feed it to your pet. On occasion you will also find items, and sometimes a gold fish that is just worth money (assuming that last one is not from a mod. I haven't caught one in my regular game yet).

Mirri- I can confirm that Gold Fish are findable in unmodded gameplay. They're rare, but I think I've found 4 during my approx. 340 hours of play so far. I think when I've sold them they were worth around 700 gold.

Yes you can get gold fish from the vanilla game. I get several every play through. You get 700g. Still trying to get some of those rare pet items though, I got some from fishing and from a boss in ACT2.

I am going to try farming him on NG3 and see if I can get a higher level option.

I picked up a dual wielding 2 in a fish last night, along with a couple other other things. I'm an engineer in this game though, so into the shared stash it goes!

Fishing is worth it. Certain pets do a lot of damage and add effects like stun and life steal. If you combine the Mimic pet with the frenzy fish and your mimc pet will destroy things in veteran and elite and take no damage.

I did give my pet a mimic fish to get some help in my boss fight today, since I'm running through on hardcore right now and I seem to be a titch squishy.

Yeah I am currently HC Veteran and my pet is constantly fed fish. He is always low HP in his normal form but i feed him any fish pretty much and he stays in battle.

I've never seen my pet have issues, unless it was one of those moments in my modded games where my character has died so fast I didn't see what happened.

Found a secret fishing hole and picked up three pieces of gear, one rare. Not so bad.

Anyone have any preferred fish that they use or hang onto more than others? I haven't really tried all that many besides the mimic and the wisp, more because of the situation.

I like Web Spider for it's immobile ability otherwise I choose fish with a damage effect.
