Super difficult all the sudden
I'm no pro gamer, I play on normal. I have a Tenebris lvl 49, playing up until this point is very casual, not problem with huge hordes, with not much dying. I just got to Elemental Oasis (level: 45) in Sunered Battlefield and I'm getting killed in 2-3 shots by the first single monsters.

My physical armor is 210 and elementals are around 300-350. I'm sure my build is wrong, but I'm not sure how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated.

**UPDATE**... Nevermind... I think I just wasn't playing defensively... but I still would like feedback on whether my armor should be much higher for lvl 49

This is very interesting. I've always wondered if this would happen on the lower difficulties. Thanks for confirming that for me.

Armor won't protect a character from high Damage. Better alternatives would be to farm the Eyes of Grell or Manticore for Damage Reduction, equip Items that add Flat Numbers to Max Health, assign points into Defensive Skills if available. Equip a Shield that has 30% or any kind of Missile Reflection, Invest into Dodge or Block Chances with Items, Randomly find (Jurick for Item Sockets and) Boris in a dungeon and purchase Stat boosts on Items preferably Dexterity and Vitality in this case.

Thanks for the great info... My stats are inverted from what you suggest: S106 D59 F99 V69. I use a unique two handed great hammer with a focus on fire dmg, dps is 770. Maybe that's my problem... maybe I would be better off using a single hand weapon so I can use a shield. I just looked up an article on how to farm, going to try the LAN/Reroll area trick, unless you know of a better way.

In addition to steffire's answer, items that grants massive amount of HP (like +1000 HP) are very valuable too. The bigger your life pool is, the more leeway you'll have to drink health potion.

Oh and don't hesitate to drink a health potion as soon as you take damage. There's more than enough health potions in the game for that.

Another thing i wanted to mention is that you play Tenebris, a modded class - but you should keep in mind that not all modded classes are balanced. Some are really overpowered, and some others are just underpowered. It's cool to play custom classes and all but you're kinda taking a risk in either making the game too easy or too hard.

I'm not the "farming eyes" type. One or two of "physical" or "all" reduction is all I usually equip on normal mode, if that. I can definitely tell you that 210 physical armor is too low at that level. However, maybe you are playing the Synergies mod, since you say you are playing a Tenebris, and the balances are different for that mod.

We tend to assume that the elemental oasis will be all about elemental damage, and that causes us to be less concerned about our physical armor in there. However, the game always seems to notice what our weak spots are, and will send the appropriate monsters to hit us where it hurts.

Tenebris isn't from Synergies :-)

Actually Strength and Focus are fine for the usual Level Up investments since it helps to delete foes with high damage as soon as possible. Gakm7's Embermage Guide is proof of that.

However Boris the Stat Enchanter is the ultimate form of attaining Stats and the higher the Item Level the better the Enchants purchased.

The Oasis Enchanter can also be used to randomly purchase Dodge Chances from 4% to 7% per Item if it lands twice. Some Shields and the Blocking Tome also help by adding more Block Chance.

In other words the best way to gather the best Defenses is by all the other methods rather than by level up Stat investments which are better for improving Damage.

The alternative method to Rerolling zones and vendors is by walking into 3 other areas (Dungeons and Portals won't count) such as the famous Paths and large areas. By Act 3 this is much easier by walking through Acts 2 or 1 which are available.

If you completed the Poisoned Skara Nest in the Salt Barrens then Act 2 will also have a Gem Vendor which can be Rerolled and Act 3 Imperial Camp always has a Gem Vendor in it's town. Gems are a good temporary solution until Eyes and Skulls can be Farmed from Bosses, Champions, Chests and Rerolled Phase Beasts (preferably the ones with lots of Chests).

Armor doesn't protect much from High Damage foes. That's what all the other Defensive Bonuses are for. It can be misleading since the Defenses listed to the Player on the main Stat Screen appear important however the most vital ones are actually listed deep in the Arcane Panel (the window with the big scrolling list of numbers and words).

The Elemental Oasis also contains a battle with 4 Elemental Champions at the end of the Dungeon and they are a good example of the kind of foes that require some Item Farm preparation by the Player in order to succeed.

Here is my favorite list of TL2 Steam Guides. Besides Class Builds there are also some interesting ones explaining the mechanics of the game and important Items to consider:

The Shadow Tree contains some very helpful Skills for a Berserker's survival and if combined with some of the more helpful and self sustaining Skills in the other Trees along with Farming for the lesser known yet more helpful defense bonuses from Drops then it will be much easier.

Sigh, one person years ago complained that he didn't think the armor did any good, and ever since people have been taking up that mantra as if it is fact. It is not. The primary reason SuperBeetle was getting so much damage is because his physical armor is way too low.

We can all agree, however, that Boris is the best enchanter, with Jurick, the Socketer, a close second. I only use elemental enchanters for my weapons, or if I didn't get enough elemental gems to properly balance those. Keeping your elemental defenses balanced is very important. Whatever you are deficient in, you will tend to get hit with that the most.

What is also super important is that you have high health regeneration gems installed, and perhaps something that gives you extra maximum health. This will prevent damage over time hits and also keep you from getting killed from any situation where there is more than one enemy hitting you. The extra maximum health will help to keep you from getting one-shot and then the high health regeneration lets you recover quickly. I like to also have high mana regeneration.

Of course, Steffire (a friend) and Potterman (who often likes to be snarky with me, lol) seem to be a team and always advocate the above-listed methods instead. However, there are plenty of people who don't speak as often on here who use the same methods I use. I think it's good to have differing opinions. A good game can be played in many different ways. So try different things for yourself and see what you prefer.

The link is very old. It's been a while since Salan stopped updating synergies on moddb and started having an external website instead (which does not exist anymore). I can assure you if you fire the synergies version on the steam workshop you won't be able to find any tenebris at all.

In fact in retrospective I believe his necromancer class might have been heavily based on tenebris... because both look very very similar

Anyway that's the main page for tenebris class
https://www.nexusmods.com/torchlight2/mods/30

And I think there must be a workshop version too

Not worth arguing with you about this. Have a merry Christmas.

Have I done anything bad to you? I don't think I got aggressive or anything on my part, so i'm not sure why you are reacting like this.

If you want we can add each others on steam and discuss it out because frankly i have no idea what's up

It does remind me that I used to stock heavily on Blood Embers and Vitality in my early years and it does work against most foes.

Most of my thoughts on Armor is mostly pulled from the extremes of Tarroch's Tomb on the hardest settings although Gakm7 has shown that pure Damage builds can be just as viable or in other words no defensive Skull Eye Farming necessary.

On lower difficulties and on dungeons found in the usual places even a little extra defense regardless of it's type does wonders for survival.

And by Act 3 the Gem Vendors are available to be Rerolled which is very helpful to solve any build deficiencies Players may find while playing.

Ultimately if a Player finds something that works. It's good with me.
