That is certainly too much. Claptrap's Bolt from Act 3 inserted into the Weapon will reduce Fumble Chance significantly. I assume this is the vanilla game? No mods?
Dexterity reduces the fumble penalty, so I'm wondering if that has something to do with it. I'll try to find a low-level character, or I'll make one, and I'll see what it's like without leveling Dexterity.
I also started a few low-level characters. One at Veteran difficulty and one at Elite, to see if that would change anything. Both characters have approximately the same fumble chance as the Arcane Statistics page says they should.
Did you try setting the floating text to verbose? It should give you a more accurate idea of the damage your character is doing.
I set it to verbose and started whacking the dummy. 1s are purple fumbles, 2s are orange regular hits, and 3s are blue crits. I am on elite playing as an engineer, currently lvl 23 with a focus on the leveling the buildings (any of the bots that can be made / spawned). I can take a screenshot of anything you wish to see stat wise.
Though I do have a couple of "stolen on hit" stats that don't activate unless I crit, so I'm thinking those "regular hits" might have been recoveries. (if those dont proc a "hp stolen on hit")
This is all unmodded, btw.
<edit> Id like to add that the weapon I was a 1 handed hammer and shield. I'm testing out a 2 handed hammer and I seem to be hitting more... idk
Anyway, your fumble rate is just weird. I got back on my beginner characters in the Estherian Enclave. The Berserker is on Elite and has a 21% fumble chance and I got 10 fumbles out of 25 hits. I tried a 2nd time and got 18 fumbles out of 100 hits.
EDIT: I got on my level 100 Outlander. His fumble chance is 21%, but the important part is that his fumble penalty is ZERO%. His stats say his fumble recovery is 100%. When I attacked the town dummy, I was not able to get anything at all that resembled a fumble. I was getting near 100 hits and decided it was pointless. His gear has nothing to reduce fumble chance or change fumble recovery. Then I re-read the description on Dexterity, and it says Dexterity also increases fumble recovery. So that, I think, is your answer. If you want less fumbling, increase your Dexterity.
Also it looks like any attacks that fail to overcome armor and thus do the minimum of 1 damage are displayed in the fumble color regardless of anything.
And honestly, it might have been my weapon was just garbage compared to everything I was fighting. I finally got an upgrade for it and now I'm not fumbling more than half my hits.
Yeah your weapon and stats must have put you just on the cusp of breaking through their armor, so most of those 1 damage hits weren't true fumbles.
As for colors, I vaguely recall someone referring to the orange colors as red a long time ago. I'm thinking it might have something to do with different monitors and if some people have adjusted the hues on the monitors that allow that, so that colors come out different for different people.
With low strenght damage may fall and eventually become mostly fumble.
