in contrast, runic games never got around to making any console ports for torchlight2 before they were shut down (there might have been plans for it but definitely no firm timelines).
the torchlight2 ports you see now were contracted-out to panic button by perfect world. And neither of those groups have a good commercial reason to sink more devtime and money into improving the pc version of torchlight2.
I remember having to use pinnacle profiler for the original game actually, with a trick with keeping the mouse movement in a very small circle around my toon to sort of make the right stick work iirc. rip the pinnacle maker, that and the followup padstarr were some awesome tools. The creator died around a couple of years ago, and no more new keys can be issued and when I went to check the forums recently they are also down so keep that in mind, since you probably can't get a key for it any more last I heard unless you already had one from years ago.
Those are my favorite controller software on the pc, you could upload/download controller profiles for specific games and use them to control windows with the pad too. The profiles were accessible within the program. The options were very extensive for the patient folks that put a lot of work into their profiles, I remember using it for swtor when that first came out on my bounty hunter. Speaking of cloud profiles on some nice pc apps, if you have a vr or wmr headset you should also check out vorpx. They let people share their custom profiles for games too and it can run dx8-dx11 games not made for vr through your headsets and allow you to customize settings per game. Those different tools greatly improved my pc experiences, vorpx is still being updated frequently.
I tried xinput or whatever, and some other program I can't recall the name of, and joytokey but pinnacle and it's successor padstarr were my favorites. joytokey was very simple, but also very practical and good for 2d games especially with basic inputs and is also good. I used joytokey to play super mario crossover, an old flash-based browser game that plopped nes characters like samus aran and mega man and the contra dudes into super mario bros. 1. https://joytokey.net/en/ is the joytokey site and it seems it's still free to use if you wanna give it a whirl. No clue if it's still updated though, since I haven't used it for years by now since most games these days tend to have pad support, and I use ds4windows if they don't support my dualshock. I do remember playing torchlight 2 with a pad once, probably through pinnacle, but I also remember that when I started using mods it wasn't very practical so I had to switch kb.
Yeah, that.
Runic no longer exists.
While Perfect World is happy to leverage the existing product (by doing a quick port to the console market), they have no intention of doing any further development for the game.
100% agreed.
I, too, was wondering how Torchlight had been ported to consoles, yet the PC version had no controller support. My question has been answered. I'm annoyed at the answer, but it doesn't change a thing.
This is my top favourite genre of all time, and I sunk a good few hundred hours into TL2, when I was still able-bodied. I've since become disabled, in chronic pain, and don't play any games without controller support, anymore, because it's just too difficult and painful.
So, I'm sad, but not exactly surprised. The genre doesn't get a huge amount of offerings that support being played on controller. 🤷🏻♀️ Oh well.
I'm sorry to here that you also suffer. I will keep in mind how lucky I am that I can still use a mouse and keyboard. I hope for your sake that they find a way to offer controller support. I'll check my other games that are similar to this one to see if they offer it. If they do, I'll let you know.
Update: Have you already tried:
The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing Final Cut
Victor Vran
They should support controllers. However, for Victor Vran, you might want to read these threads first and/or do your search on their Discussions pages for the word "controller".

The art style for these 2 games is different than TL2, although they resemble each other in that regard. However, the dialogue is splattered with humorous quips, and they are not so gritty and serious as a lot of other games. They are fun and challenging. TL2 is my all-time favorite game, but all of the Van Helsing games are in 2nd place, and I have to admit that I'm still in the early stages of exploring Victor Vran, so I don't know where it will go on my short list. It might make it to the #3 spot, though.
For Van Helsing, there is the option to purchase the first 3 games and then get Final Cut for free. Final Cut merges the first 3, but there are enough changes that some of us like to play the old versions as well. However, I did not check to see if VH1, 2, and 3 had controller support. I only checked the Final Cut version.
Yes, thank you! I enjoyed the bit of (one of the?) Victor Vran that I did play, but it didn't "catch" me quite like TL2. I know I tried one of the Van Hellsing games (though, I can't recall which), but controller support had the same problems as Grim Dawn, below, but more to do with issues with menus, inventory, and shop.
I also bought Grim Dawn a long while ago, because the steam page said it supported controllers, but that's not quite true, IMO. If the controller option only "technically" works, but not actually, that seems more like false advertisement, than anything. It's barely workable at low levels, and definitely not a valid option, later on. 😨
At least most FPS loot grinders work pretty effortlessly on controller. There are - thankfully - a decent number of those around.
And, overall, it seems like controller support is becoming more and more common, as many players switch to couch-gaming. 👍🏻 But, smaller indie teams don't usually make it a priority, which is sad, but understandable.
I might have to give the Victor Vran series(?) another try. Thank you much for the suggestions! 😊
And I'm sorry you're facing similar issues. Chronic pain, especially, is exhausting, and really hard to just "deal with" on a daily basis. I'll wish you s'more good days, at least! Don't be hard on yourself, do what you can do, and don't do what you can't. 😣
Grim Dawn has pretty great controller support for a diablo style game.
Van Helsing and Victor Vran also have it.
