So I click on a quest and get pretty much a black window
Instead of a quest item reward, or the promt to accept. This doesn't happen all the time but some of the time. And when it does, nothing freezes or lags, I just can't click anything within the game and thus need to restart the game. It happened a few times now and is really annoying when trying to play coop.

Any ideas?

Hard to find exact matches yet everything I've found suggests this symptom is the result of the video card or video driver or video settings of some kind whether it be the Card App (Nvidia?) or another program that changes it.

Basically something occurs in game that make the current video settings or video power shut down.

So the suggestion involves either checking the drivers or changing settings to something the game can handle.

Apparently Torchlight can be very sensitive with some video settings.

I was experiencing random flashing black screens while gaming (sounds still working and game reappearing after 1 sec).

A lot of solutions can be found around the web but none works for me.

Simply check your monitor and set the response time to normal (or disable Gaming mode).
Funny as i havent suspect the monitor since my TV got the same issue (Gaming mode ON).
I think it's due to drivers or windows conflicts and the screen refresh rate.

I set up a TL2 profile for my EVGA GTX 570 HD:
GPU CLOCK: 732 MHz
MEMORY CLOCK: 1900 MHz
VOLTAGE: Default

Zero crashes in countless hours of testing.

Only TL2 makes my nvidia card crash.

I play in windowed mode now, seems to work good

I did a reformat a couple of days ago and reinstalled Torchlight 2 today. I also installed some updated firmware from EVGA for my 570 since my 570 was a bit on the old side. The newer firmware unlocked the fan and increased the voltage from 1051 to 1063. Upon launching the game the card immediately failed. I then brought the voltage down a bit and was able to relaunch and get AA turned off. The card failed again after 25 minutes of gameplay.

From what I've seen in my testing, increasing voltage (even very, very slightly) makes the card more unstable with Torchlight 2. For other games I've had this problem in (SMITE, D3, the Dominion map in LoL) increasing voltage or bringing the GPU and Memory clock speeds down to stock speeds are a fix. For some reason T2 appears to be very sensitive to increased voltage on the card. I've had the most success with voltage in the mid to upper 900s and bringing the GPU clock to around 730. I've had 3 hour sessions with those settings, but I still haven't found anything that completely gets rid of the crashing.

Good info steff, but didnt read the whole thing. An easier answer could be if someone is useing a mod class and the mod creater missed some quest rewards. This happened to me with the god mod class. I clicked on him to get my reward, the choose a reward screen came up, but i couldnt click on anything.

Good call and thanks for pointing this out! ^_^

I may have misunderstood what the original poster meant by "black window".

I'll link the mod fix for the quest issue here.

Yeah I didnt' mean the entire screen going black, just the window that pops up when you click the quest npc where you can choose the rewards / start a quest etc.

And I probably should mention. It doesn't really happen in single player for me. Only mp.

Basically since then.... since my last comment, I had at least like 5 other ridiculous problems that made the game unplayable...

Seriously wtf?

Game freezes when I try to enchant amulet? ??

Duplicate login? I am only using one torchlight and one pc at a time? WTF

Well, the mini map was not workign at all all of a sudden, but that was just keybinds... Someone thought it is a great idea to make shift and ctrl change mini map from the default layout... Lol...

Ehm.

Help.

Before I go off and install something else. Because yea. I really like this game. I played 1k hours of poe and I hate diablo and there's literally nothing else out there to play so yea.

Dude, dont give up yet. Tell us what mods your running and in what order from top to bottom. Could be compatability issues with mods.
Xercules Feb 13, 2018 @ 5:16am
Ya i just noticed too you said it happens in mp. Multiplayer is buggy with certain mods. Just tell us what mods your using and we’ll do our best to set you up.

Also man, the first torchlight is short but fun as well
Laura Feb 13, 2018 @ 8:19am
My friend obviously uses the same mods when he plays with me and has no problems.

He played assassin and i played nethermancer, when the ♥♥♥♥ became unplayable at certain levels today.

Uhm...

So we ran the following:

1. Extra synergy classes
2. Nethermancer class
3. Potion and spell vendors
4. Town upgrade
5. Mana problems solved!
6. The endless dungeon
7. Permanent buffs.
8. Ultimate respec
9. Socket enchanter
10. Lost spirit merchant

These are the mods used for the problems I listed in teh comment above. Not the post.

As for the mods used while the "black window of npc quest with no option to exit or continue but no actual game freeze" happens...

So the other guy was playing outlander and i played wanderer.

The mods were:

1. Mana problems solved
2. Wanderer
3. Permanentbuffs
4. Potion and spell vendors
5. Ultimate respec
6. Lost spirit merchant
7. Socket Enchanter

Yes I am aware there were only 7. Because we used that many and not 10.

The freezing and such, didn't occur with these.

Also for the other comment, I guess just general freezing and lag occurs a lot too.

I am not sure it's my pc, because it runs everything else fine and I do frequest scans cleaning registry and viruses and everything else a ccleaner / eset scans cleans, as well as keeping up my graphic card drivers and windows updates. Using windows 8.1

I don't have anything else open other than discord, 2 browser tabs and the game.

Ehm...

Also the pc is like: i7, 8 gb ram and 970 gtx. So really should be way overkill for something like torchlight. And my internet is also like 200 mbs dl and like 50 upload... So can't be that. Also the other guys that i played with had decent internet too.

Could it be the firewall or something like that messing up the game?

I also do not run any anti virus.

Now when either I try to join him or he tries to join me, instant crash of game.

And.... I removed number 10 and 7 and still same result. Basically the game suddenly became completely unplayable, so my friend and me will start over with a different mod setup again.

Still... not giving up.

So basically tried to remove the synergy classes. Or like, the friend and I removed it and created new char and leveled to 28... Thought it was that conflicting with nether.

Looks like nether is just a solo only mod.

Have you tried Variant? It fixes some of the bugs encountered with some mod classes.

Steff has the only idea. I dont see a problem with your mods on either situation. (Theres a town upgrade mod?). I dont have a lot of experience with multiplayer myself. I had just read a lot about glitches. If steff would have seen a mod compatability issue, she would have mentioned it. Try her mod fix maybe?

The "Mod Fix" won't help the "Nethermancer" class (it has a long history of breaking multiplayer) yet it will help anything with empty quest rewards.

Then again "Variant" can be a better option since it combines many unique classes and fixes into one mod.

= = =

"Endless Dungeon" has reports of breaking Multiplayer (there are other impressive mod options to replace it).

Click here for a list of dungeon options

Otherwise removing mods that have been bound to the mod character save file will always result in lost progress or loot (item, affix, gear, drop, inventory, pet, class, skill mods).

There are mods that can be removed without breaking the game (may still lose items linked to that mod) to which I will post a link here for a decent collection of them:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=710657313

= = =

However the original poster has the correct idea, just keep trying and changing mods because there are those that have little to no issues in Multiplayer and Removal.

And yes, many of the older mods can be broken and buggy, usually better to stick to those that were made or updated from 2016+ (yes some new ones can be buggy due to "low xp" authors yet the mods have gotten generally better).

Some of the newer mods fix and merge the older ones so it's a good trade.
