Game simply won't launch [Solved]
I press play and nothing happens. With mods or without.

I tried a few solutions found on google to this problem. Nothing worked.

I am not too keen on even fixing it, but maybe this forum post will help me.

Can you list those tried solutions and the operating system (Windows, Mac, Linux)?

Windows 8.1

It all worked a couple days ago. I don't know what happened. I didn't install any updates or anything. Only did a few scans with cc cleaner and eset (I really don't think it removed relevant files).

What I tried was deleting the entire save folder with mods in the documents / runic games / torchlight... because yea, the files there may have been corrupted launcher files etc.

Other than that I tried reinstalling the game, ofc. Several times. Since it takes me 2 mins to download it.

Other than that i tried creating a shortcut and launching it as admin, didn't really work...

I suppose I could try installing it on ssd.

Have these been tried?

I put it in Win 8 compatibilty mode and now it runs for me. But don't try to run it with the "test mode" button from the Windows screen as it always failed to launch. Launching it from Steam works fine now.

I've run this game on Win 10 no problem before, but it's not working for me on Win 10 now. I just re-downloaded it today and tried to play; nothing happens after I click the play button when launching from Steam. When I go directly to the Torchlight2.exe in the game files, I get a message that the game can't start because MSVCR100.dll is missing from my computer. I've tried verifying the game cache and it says it has all the files.

Here is the file that's missing, right from the Microsoft site:

Once I downloaded it the game launched just fine.

Reinstalling visual c++ 2010 fixed my problem

If the installation in the TL2 folder won't work, getting it directly from microsoft will.

If the one from microsoft says "a newer version is already installed", it might be a corrupt version from Razer, uninstalling that, then reinstalling the one downloaded directly from microsoft fixed my problem.

I did something interesting before reinstalling. Because mod launcher didn't work anymore there needed to be a concerning corrupted file. i had a look and found modlauncher.sch in the mygames/tl2 folder. Before the new install of tl2, i copied this file to another directory.
Now tl2 mod launcher had to do a new one after my install. All i want to say: Maybe i didn't have had to uninstall anything. Just deleting (or backing up) the obviously corrupted modlauncher.sch would have made it.

Right, so first of all, thanks for the help.

What fixed the problem, at least before it stops working again (for any reason) was going into the local installer files through steam and then changing the compatibility of torchlight2.exe. I clicked troubleshoot compatibility and then just tried the recommended settings. The message that popped up after that while trying to launch through the file exe was "fatal initiation failure", but the game seems to work fine from steam now.

You're welcome and I'm glad to hear! Do mods function and does it have any other issues when loaded with Steam?
