Saving or Spending Gold in Vanilla
I've been dragging all 4 classes plus an additional outlander that started out as a mule through veteran vanilla... Gold is key to everything but it doesn't drop a bunch without lucky coins socketed in spare slots.

I haven't farmed by re-rolling LAN game levels just yet but I may begin that as the toons are all in Act3 now and are relative paupers.

Occasionally I came across Filip, Boris, etc. enchanters but I rarely spend gold on them because AFAIK enchanting is based upon level (thus an Act2 enchanter will give lesser quality enchants than Act3).

Where I've been spending gold & on what:
-on decent rare armor set items that typically are found with Jana or sometimes whichever blacksmith
-on gambling with Duros in town mostly for unique armor/set pieces, rings/amulets, and seldom weapons

The balance seems just about right if a little impoverished in vanilla so I may have to farm the rerolled LAN maps... or I may just try to leave the classes be with what they have on and save the gold for late game goodies.

It seems to me that saving gold for later game vendor scrolls may be better than blowing it all on what seems like great rare set and unique loot now.

Are you selling every crap gear item that drops to the vendor via your pet? Thats a big in-come of gold :)

Yup. I sell almost everything.
-normal equipment
-normal green equipment
-normal blue equipment

I only keep socketables/gems, uniques, and blue set pieces around my level or higher.

My gem strategy:
-collect any 3 element gems (fire/ice/electric/poison) that sell individually for like 160 gold
-transmute gems in sets of 3 into hopefully mana or health regen keepers
-sell the transmuted duds (execute%, range, etc.) for like 400 gold

My set piece strategy:
Transmute blue "meh" set pieces in pairs into (hopefully) a decent (stat boosting) set piece, otherwise sell them.

Toss spare/duplicate uniques into the shared stash for my other more poor toons to sell.

Enchanting cost is based on Item level.

For a directe answer, SPEND your gold now. In my opinion the only thing that matters is your final build and it's faster to reach it spending your gold rather not. The amount of gold you are saving now is ridiculous compared to what you will have to spend at the end. At the same time don't waste too much time sellng trash item, managing your storage, item stransfer etc. There is a point where you should set "item display" to rare.
One effective way to increase your income is to progress in the game.
I wouldn't care farming good blue sets rolls until I reach the highest level requierement.
And once you reach final levels you can start farming gold via Beast Challenge.

Portal Beast Act1 Frosted Hills (Any NG) (Ignite the things challenge)
Or "Lava challenge" via Beast Portal (Act3 Sundered Battlefield) (Any NG?)
Lastly there is a guide in the guide section of the hub telling you how to farm gold effectively.
Most interesting part explains you how to farm with Phase Beasts.

I've seen that and have done some of those things listed in the guide. Hmm.. I see your point though Paco -at some point hording gold is diminishing returns if the gear/items to actually get to endgame (and then onto NG+/final build/etc.) aren't that worthwhile.

Gold is more scarce just playing along in un-modded vanilla, following the various quests/sidequests just once. I typically re-hash and re-do side quests and always phase beast challenges to not only get more gold for stuff but to build up levels/fame.

I figure the gold won't last long though as I'm Always tempted to go Duros gambling for something unique for the other classes I play. I.E. I take my Berserker shopping for embermage armor gambling because he cannot equip the unique restricted embermage stuff and it helps to avoid spending lots of gold on cr@p.

I have tried analyzing the money numbers/etc. to maximize my gambling because there's nuthin worse than throwing 5k gold at Duros for a green level piece of sh!t armor with 4 sockets instead of some awesome unique set item.
