Then the engineer is great to.
Fish lots. You can boost your pet for those boss fights, or anytime really.
Here are a couple of Guides that offer some useful info on Skull farming and one Guide even recommends an Embermage build to farm which can be used to give useful items to future characters if needed.

Some basic class advice:
Engineers: Safe with lots of survivability and damage potential at both Range and Melee mainly because of Forcefield and Heal Bot.
Outlanders and Embermages: Safest at Range with skills that enable quick escapes and huge damage from a distance.
Berserkers: Difficult to survive with Melee unless the Shadow skills are used along with Critical Heals. Ultimately safest at Range however with proper gear the Melee becomes viable as long as Damage is being converted into heals.

Boris the Stat Enchanter is very important whenever available: Stats (Strength, Dexterity, Focus, Vitality) are decent however they need Boris' boosts on gear in order to help the character thrive at the hardest difficulties.
Eyes of Grell are worth farming from Act 1 whenever possible (make Lan games to quickly reset the maps).
Later the Skull of Limony is worth farming when available followed by a few Skulls of Reichliu and near level 90 there's an all class Dragonrift Set with just 4 of it's pieces it enables 10% Health Steal which allows Strength, Dexterity and Focus to be converted indirectly into self heals.
Vitality can be avoided so defense can be stacked from gear instead.
There are Blue Tier Shields in this game that can add 30% Missile Reflect Chance and are worth using if available.
It's okay to avoid some big slow weapons unless they have good item bonuses since the fast Dps from small weapons can boost Skill damage.
High chances to critical hit (decent Dexterity with some good Strength and or Focus) will gain massive charge more so than any % Charge boost.

Weapon Switching is something any class can use to gain multiple benefits from Skills:
Engineers can weapon switch between a Blast Cannon (Range Weaken Foes) and a Shield with Melee (Defensive Area Damage) package.
Outlanders can weapon switch out from Shotgonne Mastery with foes still Blinded,
Embermages can weapon switch stack the effects of Staff Mastery and Wand Chaos.
Berserkers can benefit from weapon switching Items with enemy armor reduction over to weapons that have better direct damage while using Wolf Pack.

That's some basic advice. I hope this helps! ^_^
Gladly will at some point! I have waited 4 years only because I wanted to gather accurate info and helpful advice on the game.
However it's clear to me now that I have enough info for several proper Guides!
Thanks for reminding me of this! ^_^
