Crashes on Launch
Okay so, before I got the Aniv Update for my windoes 10 (I had win10 before hand but there was an update called the anniviersary update) TL2 could work perfectly on my laptop with no problems, no crashes, an long runtimes. Now after the update (which I cannot go back an undo) as soon as I try to clic play, it shows on steam it tried to launch but nothing happens. All I get is a little angelwing notification in the corner that it has crashed.

I have tried putting it on compatability mode, reduced colors, launch as admin, and all other options from the .exe file in the games folder location but all that does is have a giant red x warning the game fails to launch. If someone knows how to please get this running for people after the aniv update for win10 it would be greatly appreciated!

I've been searching every single nooke and cranny of the internet for solutions to this problem, If only the developers provided support for this issue. I've been searching every single solution related to anything similar to this issue and everything has been pointless to do. I had already reinstalled steam, I'd really like to be able to play this $20 game without having to refund it because its developers haven't fixed this common issue.

Deleting runic games folder in doccuments <- wrong solution
directx web installer<- wrong solution
Deleting the save and mod saves<-wrong solution
Downloading the game from the developers website<-wrong solution
Attempting every single compatability setting<-wrong solution
Removing steam, reinstalling and then reinstalling tl2<- wrong solution
deleting the modlauncher.sch file<- wrong solution
deleting the crashreporter<-wrong solution
deleting the ogre files<- wrong solution

We payed the game today with a friend, we both have w10, I can play the game just fine, but he gets this same error, as soon as he hits the play bottom, a pop-up appears saying game has stopped working.
Please someone with the proper knowledge look into this, we have tried all of the solutions already spoken of regarding this issue, but anything helps.

for the love of god, please can someone from runic games deal with this. I'm tired of reading countless posts with the same exact issue that all have the comment "I contacted support, but they had no clue what was going on and didn't really seem to care what was the issue"
*sighs* of course microsoft knows about this problem, there is no way they wouldn't seeing as this "update" killed the option to play so many more games too.

Just going to leave this here since I know I'm not the only one that has this Crash on Launch issue for tl2 torchlight 2 II. Go to your doccuments then mygames-runic games-torchlightII and then go to your local settings folder and change it so that OPENGL is at 1. That should get you past crashing instantly. Now just to get the game past "startup"

My friend uninstalled steam and torchlight 2, installed both again, and now he can play :)
Hope you guys can fix this too.

Yeah as stated this is something people have tried before. Thank you for the suggestion but complete uninstall isn't something that works. It is something that involved the anniversary update with windows 10 that killed the ability to play this an several other games.

Yeah actually, my friend tried to open the game today, and the very same error appears :(

I installed Torchlight 2 on my windows 10 x64 laptop and it ran without crashing... but because so many others have had problems I'm going to continue keeping a close eye on it and these discussions in case it happens to me.

I can consistently reproduce and fix this issue. It's super annoying. If I delete the Torchlight 2 folder in ...\Documents\My Games\Runic Games and try again to load the game, it works consistently. However, if I exit for any reason, even without changing a setting in the UI, the game crashes and continues to crash until I once again delete \torchlight 2\ from \Runic Games\. This tells me that Torchlight 2 is writing something each load which is creating the crash. What that is, I don't know. I'm running 1440p resolution, but the game supports that. I have the latest DirectX and also tried installing DX9c to resolve the issue with no change. Full screen/Windowed Full screen makes no difference either. Anyone else have any ideas?

I uninstalled deleted files from all 3 directories listed in that thread and reinstalled. Same issue.

There must be another location that is storing my save game though, so that needs to be purged as well. I tested before copying my saved game back into My Games\Runic\Torchlight 2\ and my save was still present.

Once again the fire load was fine, but after exiting and reloading I get the crash.

Just got the game from sale. At least for me, the error leading the game to crash on startup, started after I changed the game from "Fullscreen" - "Fullscreen windowed" under settings.

As being a streamer its prefered to run games in windowed fullscreen.
NOTE! I did not uninstall the game or steam at all during this fix.

My solution is a fast fix, thanks to a post further up gave me the place to look.

1. Go to this location:
C:\Users\"Whatever name you have"\Documents\My Games\Runic Games\Torchlight 2

2. Open textdocument "local_settings"
- Change the following:

WINDOWED_FULLSCREEN :0
(Explain, this must be set to "0" as this option causes the game to crash)

FULLSCREEN :1
(Explain, setting this to "1", your game runs in fullscreen as default)

3. Then save changes made inside the document and run the game as normal.

For anyone in 2018 having issues: disable all overlay programs. For me, disabling the NVidia GeForce Experience Overlay got the game running.
