What are the point of netherealm portals?

I'm new to the game, got it from the steam sale, having tons of fun.

My only question are these, "Netherealm" portals that appear in what seems to be every dungeon. I've entered about 10 of them now and none of them seem to have anything interesting to them besides some unique mobs and that's it. I thought the special plants there trigger something once you kill them all but still nothing?....

I've done some research and perhaps these portals drop rare loot from them that can only be found there but supposedly they have a super low drop rate?

Anyone shed any light on this? Thanks.

You can upgrade a Netherealm weapon in one. The kind of weapon that improves by killing said monster.

Basically, it's an optional side-dungeon. Netherim can be tough (except for Tentacles and Netherlings, which are basically free XP), but are pretty good XP/kill. There tends to be at least two champions and sometimes more in each Netherrealm portal, so it's not a bad idea to poke into them for earning a bit of Fame, too.

Despite the importance of the Netherim to the plot, Netherralm Portals are nothing super-spectacular.

dang that's super weird. Considering their appearance and theme I'd figure they'd be more important for what they are.
