I Finished !
Greetings.

Some perspective here: I purchased the game February 13, 2013. Yes, it took me that long to finish. I usually don't play a few single games at once, I play what I am in the mood for. Occasionally I do play a game through for hours to finish, but that is rare. In this case I played for a few weeks to get through and finish. In addition, as with this game (and others too) I lose save games through crashes, resinstalls, upgrades, etc.

I played the game on "Normal" mode. I chose the engineer class with a panda as a pet. I juiced him up to do as much melee damage as possible and outfitted him with equipment that gave me HP and mana. At first I focused on melee with splash\area damage, but slowly over time I changed to wielding a cannon with fusillade as a skill. I had a healing bot and golem helping me out too. I used the shield ability, tons of mines, and electricity bombs - good fun. I don't remember my finishing level, maybe in the 40's somewhere.

What I did not like:

- The cursor - man does that thing get lost in the fray. Misclicking menus left and right.
- The cursor (again, yes 1 and 2 it bothered me that much) - I must have clicked a portal\travel icon dozens of times by accident during my play-through. Freaking maddening. In the heat of battle I would click right out and have to click right back in. Sometimes the gate would transport you to a place that was not directly accessible from where I left. Argggghhhhh. It happened to me 2x fighting the Netherlord. Cost me a bunch of time. There needs to be a confirmation click to travel. I am surprised this has not been addressed in a patch or a mod.
The Sound - not in the game itself, but during the final boss fight I lost sound. Even after reboot. Since it was so close to the end, I did not feel like troubleshooting. I will just watch the ending with sound on the Internet somewhere. I know I am in the minority with this problem, but Ithought I would mention just in case.

What I like:

- The art design and overall aesthetic
- The vast amount of loot (even though I just kinda' gave up caring towards the end)
- The controls were tight and responsive
- The range of skills and abilities
- Only one bug\technical issue - see my comment on the sound above

I really never liked 3rd preson games in this gemre. I liked Torchlight 1, I played the demo, but did not purchase it due to the lack of variety in maps. Torchlight 2 was what changed my mind - After Torchlight 2 I purchased Diablo 3, Grim Dawn, and the Van Helsing series. As good as Torchlight 2 is, I like the Van Helsing series best so far. If you have not played it, I highly recommend it (the tower defense Game Death Trap based on that series is fantastic too). I have not gotten far enough into Grim Dawn yet for it to usurp Van Helsing, we will see. Since I am playing Diablo 3 vanilla my mind may change once I play the DLC.

In summary, Torchlight 2 is a great game. If you don't own it, and like the genre, buy it and play it. If you own it, and have not finished it, finish it already! Torchlight 3 anybody?

Thanks to those who helped with some technical issues on this forum. Now on to some Grim Dawn . . .

Congrats on finishing and enjoying the game! I won't get into what I've said about it in other threads, but in short, I think you'll enjoy Grim Dawn a lot more and find the skills and builds a lot more balanced. That's the game I switched over to after getting bored with this one.

Thanks - even though I know finishing Torchlight 2 on Normal mode is not a notable achievement. Grim Dawn seems to require more abilities strategy and tactics, whereas Torchlight seems more clicky. I like both, so not a knock on Torchlight at all, it was fun.
Have you tried the Van Helsing series? Those are super, although they have minor bugs.

YaY!!! Nice, happy that You've enjoyed the game. I finish it multiple times, solo and with friends, all classes.
Never get bored, the variety in it is hige, maps, mobs, bosses. Each class gives You so different playthrought.
Congratz and have a nice day!

It does and Torchlight 2 is more clicky.. I agree.. I have not tried Van Helsing. Just D3 at launch, TL2, PoE, and Grim Dawn.

Hey congrats on your finish! I haven't, was just looking at whether I should reinstall as I'm bored with all the p2w micro-trans :steamsalty: insanely incomplete games out now.. then saw ur post.. made up my mind to finish too.
Cheers:agathacross:

@Hammir:

Wonderful and infomative post!

I'm glad for you and wish you well with Grim Dawn!

= = =

On a seperate note:
3 years ago when I completed this game for a 3rd time (all with various Engineers) it drove me to begin my time in playing the modded vesions of TL2 and that ultimately kept me faithful to the TL2 community and I haven't looked forward since... ^_^.

Nevertheless... I have kept an eye on the "Grim Dawn" forums and I can say that the rebalance and expansion patches are very impressive!

Have fun and may it be a fulfilling journey for you!

Hah. I have reroll-itis. Consequently it took me forever to finish the game for the first time, too. I know the first 2 acts like the back of my hand, but still a stranger to the end acts ( Honestly can't say if the last part is act 4 or the last half of act 3, since it doesn't distinctly say "Act 4" when you enter the mines. But that part is about as big as a full act... ).

My first time finishing it, I totally missed Notch's Mine, complete with Creepers and the Diamond Sword. Found that this most recent time. ;) And another example of one of the things I love about the game: References. The Goonies quest in Act 1 is awesome, too.

Wow. How can you remember so much? I am impressed. I could can hardly recall anyting about the game. Not that I did not enjoy i, it was great, I just don't have that kind of brain!
ADEC Inc May 20, 2017 @ 9:17pm
Notch's Mine won't show up every time. There's another little dungeon as a nod to The Thing rarely appearing in Act 1, and a few other levels that only show up in NG+.
The Yeen Queen May 20, 2017 @ 10:34pm
Ah, that'd be why I missed it. The sword was nice, just not so useful for an embermage. Areas that only show up in NG+, huh? Suppose I actually need to play through it then...
