I think there's an in-game explanation of all the buffs in the help menu from the title screen. But, I'm not in-game right this moment so I can't check.

It brings you the blessings of the machine spirits, obviously.

I have only tried it for 2 guns

Bolter: Increases ammo from 25 to 45 and increases str from 4 to 5 (whatever that really mans, guess dmg buff, didn't really notice).

Plasma Gun: Increases ammo from 12 to 18. Increases rate of fire (if you hold down the fire button it fires much faster than normal and doesn't overheat as quickly). It's really good on this gun, you can melt things in seconds.

It doesnt, the effect varies from gun to gun.

The shotgun turns into a Flak Cannon of sorts (pellets bounce, maybe there are more shots as well).

The Heavy Bolter loses the movement penalty (dont remember if it also boosts STR).

The plasma gun gets a faster rate of firing, I think.

In the end, the bolter is the best weapon for this since its a great weapon and with +1 STR it allows it to reliably kill a huge amount of common mobs like Chaos Marines.

Every enemy has an Endurance / Defense / Whatever value that is checked against your weapon's STR to define the damage. If you attack enemies with a weapon that has a lower value, you do less damage. If you attack with a weapon with a higher STR value, you do extra damage.

You can see that on their HP bar, with a little arrow showing if your current weapon is doing reduced, extra or regular damage to quick check.
