Should I play Warhammer 40K: Space Marine before Warhammer 40K: Boltgun?
Or is it unnecessary to know anything about, what I've read is it's prequel, to follow this game's story?

I really wish studios emphasised or made it clear whether a game's story has any connection to other games in their franchises. I would think doing so is a minimal effort and a potential for profit.

Nah, it's pretty much its own thing. There merely a few nods to the previous game despite being on the same planet.

Unless it somehow ties to Space Marine 2 when it's out.

It’s not necessary.

Space Marine is a decent game and isn't very long, it's like Gears of War but instead of taking cover you're rewarded for always being on the offensive, so up to you whether you want to play it.

It's not a prequel, it came first. Prequels are things made after a product but set before it. Boltgun has links to Space Marine but i wouldn't say it's a sequel.

Thanks for the response, everyone.

I've noticed every warhammer game is a completely different gametype from fps to tactical boardplay, to rts.

I think the space hulk games are a bit closer to board games. Mechanicus also has some board game like elements.

Even if you don't need to play Space Marine before i highly recommend it. Space marine is a blast.

^This. Space Marine was dope and I can't wait for Space Marine 2.

Boltgun is set on the same planet (Graia). The taunt "I will finish what Captain Titus (=main character from Space Marine) started!" and I think there's a reference to "the Grimskull wars" and "Inquisitor Drogan" in the intro cinematic (both antagonists in Space Marine) are the references I picked up on.
