Glowing fire gun?
Why does my gun (only the boltgun it seems) sometimes glow and have fire effects? I can't see any difference with it.

That means you've picked up a special type of ammo. Go to Options->Help and scroll down to the Special Ammo section to read about the different types of ammo/their effects. (And don't feel bad for not knowing this. It's just one of many horribly explained/communicated mechanics.)

you pickin up weapon boons, check the help in the esc for more info on those pickups

Machine spirit seems to upgrade your current weapon for the duration of the level. Kraken mags upgrade it further, but for the bolter only.
