I've played through only the first two maps on Exterminatus, and did get my health down to 5% at one point, but was almost full strength by the time I got to the exit.
Thank you for the details!
The thing is the game respects your time in not turning everything into a damage sponge on the highest difficulty so it feels easier when it's still a bit more difficult. The difference in difficulty also seems to come down to how you handle less vs more basic enemies on the screen. On normal the first room you encounter a Chaos Marine has just 1 inside the room. On Exterminatus there are 3 inside the room. I assume everything past that point just has more enemies than other difficulties.
Also, I beat the first chapter on Exterminatus and the bosses do hit like trucks. Easy to beat with a Plasma Gun for the most part but the constant horde that keeps spawning on you really keeps you on your toes. It's fun.
I'll also making the game a little tougher by only picking up health and armor shards that appear to be from slain enemies, and ignoring the loose chains of shards floating around. I'll still pick up full health packs and faith/armor packs, just none that were not generated from dead enemies.
That makes the Nurgling-type enemies tougher to deal with, as they only drop armor shards.
The main marine character is too much of a powerhouse, the bolter is too strong for a first weapon and there's health, ammo and shield pickups littered everywhere. Oh, and there's a lot of grenades to pick up, which are really powerful. Didn't die once so far.
Tomorrow I'll try Exterminatus. Hopefully it makes things a bit harder.
On a scale from Doom II to Master levels of doom II, on the hardest difficulty of this game, its like....eh....nightmare? on doom2?
The game also spits an unbelievable amount of big health and shield paks for Exterminatus difficulty as well.Figured they would reduce them on higher difficulties, but its just buckets and buckets left behind.
