Just Beat Exterminatus, the difficulty I started the game on
Man it honestly sucked, I mostly save scummed every single encounter. I dont recommend this difficulty even to DOOM veterans, its just bullet sponge enemies with a billion adds. Save yourself the pain.

I'll replay the game later on medium/hard, but oof ima need a long break.

Hope we get DLC and Coop!

I just beat the game on medium and it was pretty fun. I don't blame you for save scumming though

It's about time we got a solid FPS featuring a proper Bolter.
Oddly the old Fire Warrior game, as bad as it was, had proper Bolters, but it wasn't based around them like this one.

I think the Plasma Gun with a Machine Spirit is my favorite. I'm glad to see the Vengeance Launcher again.

As a Doom veteran, it was a decent challenge but a bit easy.

Fairly bored on Exterminatus aside from the boss fights. Had to cheese the Sorcerer each time because of his hitscan beam attack. The Great Unclean one took like 15 minutes to kill as well. Not a fan of the boss design.

I've been a bit waylaid by going through the System Shock remake, but I found that going through on Exterminatus after doing a first playthrough on Hard ended up being a bit quicker and cleaner. Most of the bosses can be taken down inside a minute, though you can cut that down to 10 seconds or less if you go the Vortex Grenade route.

Been interesting to see how much of a difference it makes knowing the boss behaviors and using efficient attacks.

I found Exterminatus fine to play. The only encounters that frustrated me was the first arena with the large toad and the very last arena fight which took me about two hours to beat.

I think you should have started on Hard before going to Exterminatus (What i did)

Hard is "a bit easy" for peoples used to retro/Boomer shooter, but you kinda need it to know where Secrets and encounters are for Exterminatus.

That's because the design is more like Quake, not Doom.
Quake was imfamous for spongey enemies. Most of the rest of the design is also way more like Quake than Doom.

So even if you're a veteran in Doom, you'll still have to learn a lot of things if you're not familiar with the gameplay in Quake.

I started the game on medium, mostly as an excuse to play the game more on the later difficulties.

Did you figure out that certain enemies are resistant to some weapons and weak to others? If you save ammo for the right enemies then they are not so spongy.

I am playing on Exterminatus and beat the second chapter yesterday. The only true bullet sponges I saw were larger miniboss type enemies or the actual bosses. I mean, if you encountered a giant hulking enemy in armor and you could spray it down in 15 bolted shots it wouldn’t make much sense. But the Melta makes quick work of those enemies.

The Sorcerer boss was tankier than I would like but the vortex grenade trivializes him. Unload your grenades at his feet and then spam an energy weapon into him while the vortex grenade does it’s thing. Melts him in moments

They don't give the damage multipliers in game, but here they are:
Str/Tough | Easy | Med | Hard | Ext ----------+------+------+------+------ Double | 1.60 | 1.50 | 1.50 | 1.40 Greater | 1.35 | 1.25 | 1.25 | 1.20 Same | 1.00 | 1.00 | 1.00 | 1.00 Less | 0.90 | 0.75 | 0.70 | 0.65 Half | 0.80 | 0.65 | 0.55 | 0.45
So it certainly ends up being rather noticeable in the higher difficulties in particular.

Given that unlike other bosses the sorcerer is only toughness 6, some of the heavier weapons (namely plasma and melta) can burn him down pretty darn quick.

I'm actually really enjoying playing on Exterminatus as my 2nd playthrough. Once you get a good feel for which weapons are effective agianst which enemies you can burn down even the toughest demons in no time at all!
