Divine Fire Spellbook
Searched for this question and didn't see any other topics on it -

I just bought a divine fire spellbook for 24k from a spellbook merchant in town,
this was the first upgrade I found over the base fire spellbook. and it almost
wiped out all my money but I got it anyway.
Promptly after leaving town on the way to my next quest, a fire demon appears
and says give me the book or die, I said no it's mine, so he killed me... is this intended?
or is there another factor in play I don't know about?

Yes this is intended . The demon will appear time to time if you have a divine item equiped or in your inventory . So if you just started and this your first playthrough I would not recommend getting divine items in the early game because while they are powerful you will have to fight for them with the demon until you kill it with the Vatra sword I believe

Well ok, that's fairly discouraging but if it's intended then I will deal
with it, thank you for the reply.

This is an intended part of the gameplay. We don't have level requirements for late-game items, but we do have mechanics like this to balance progression.

There are a few ways to deal with this demon:
- You can give him one divine item, and he will not return for 30 days which is enough even to finish game in some cases.
- Once you obtain the rabbit/deer necklace, you can simply hit space and leave him in the dust. While it's possible to outrun him without the necklace, it will require some dodging and sprinting (hold left and right click to sprint, or Shift on the keyboard).
- A bit later, starting from levels 20 or 30+, you can simply defeat him to make him run.
- You can always slain him forever, hints for that are in library to the west

One last hint: in the game settings, you can enable "character comments." This will make your character warn you about incoming danger, including this demon, 5–15 seconds in advance.

Appreciate the help and further explanation. So possibly this is play issue with me?
I am level 19 and completed many quests already with no problems. I have the
necklace you describe and can outrun the demon to safety back to town. I rested
overnight, and went back out to quest the next day, and he appeared again within
minutes. He does 1-2 shot me...I have used basic upgrade mats on my armor, but
apparently not enough. Am I to understand I should be able to beat this enemy
at my level or in 1-2 levels? or does that require farming upgrades?

Well, it depends on the build and execution, as he is definitely one of the stronger enemies.
As a hint, most of the power in the game comes from leveling up, as skills hold a lot of strength. Even in the case of dying, new character attributes are scaled to match the main level.

Anyhow, we will follow player feedback, and if too many players find this character too problematic, we may nerf it in the future. Your feedback counts as well, but we are careful not to make everything too weak or the game too easy.

I would be against nerfing him, and I don't believe my issue is damage overall,
it's more that I can't stay alive long enough. So if skills are the main factor, and
I am playing dual class, then I should respec to go all into one tree/class in order
to kill this one mob, and then spec back to dual.

I was able to 1 shot him at level 13 and he ran away like a whipped dog. But, he got my health to 10% as well with 1 hit. ;)
If i knew 10 secs ahead I would have tossed all my divine items on the ground.

What spell or weapon did this? and was it upgraded at all?

It's was just a normal mace. Berzerker skills and lucky skills. Lightning charged missing health crit.

I had that happening with an earth book. I turned into a deer and ran towards the nearest town. Of course, he followed me all the way there, but that was part of the plan! Now that all the guards engaged him, I was able to stay at range and poke spells and eventually defeat him xD

One of the funniest moments in this game
