I was wondering how I could have several hundred or a few thousand in cash and go to upgrade my items and suddenly my money dropped to poverty level. Every time you upgrade a weapon or armor the actual upgrade costs you more and more money. If you don't have enough money, you can't do the upgrade. This has happened to me a couple of times in the past. One rule of thumb for melee/archers is that you should ALWAYS sell spell books. You don't need them and breaking them down into their materials can lose you hundreds if not THOUSANDS in cash. To generate loads of cash, GATHER PLANTS!!!! Get trained in ALCHEMY (the trainer is north of BOR) and you will quickly learn to make poisons. You can sell the more expensive poison for 180 gold apiece. Eventually you can make 3 potions for only 2 ingredients used. Also if you find yourself being burdened by an overabundance of RAW MEAT you can just sell it raw if you don't have a cooking station available and you are out adventuring. Otherwise get to a cooking station and turn it into something valuable and sell the end result. The cooking trainer is in GRAD. However, NEVER sell your DELICATE MEAT. Use that to make the BAKED LAMB (or whatever it's called). It satisfies your hunger by 80%. If you are running a DRUID, that's another story. You need to decide which spell books you are going to use and which to break down into materials. I just sell all of the melee weapons after I hit level 10 or so. Then I generally have no money problems. There is a quest giver north of BABA YAGA's area that gives you a quest and offers you the choice of cash or his SPARE BOW as a reward. I ALWAYS take the spare bow because it's the SHADOWS BOW which along with DAZBOG'S BOW (a DIVINE bow) can be considered the two best bows in the game. Also once you are powerful enough to take on the GOLEMS wandering around every area of the game, POUND THEM into submission they dropped IRON ORE and other items that can be broken down into blade parts and other materials for upgrading. Hope this helps.
