How do the highscores work?

The number with which I finish the game is not usually reflected in the highscore.

It should keep your highest score I believe.... When I first started playing, it seemed to reset my highscore to my 'most recent score'. It now seems to keep my highest score... not sure if it's a glitch that only happens occasionally (meaning it could happen again) or if it has been fixed.

Hello, you should try to beat your own record and that of other players. Whenever you beat your own high score, your score will be sent to the online leaderboard.

Hey, always remember to advance to the next island, but keep an eye on the amount of coins, ok? ;)

Yes, that's exactly what I was referring to, I didn't even know you could change islands, I would recommend a tutorial, one of those that is a screen with notes and little arrows xD.

having played similar games, I didn't have that issue, but when the bar in the bottom right fills up, it makes a sound, indicating it wants to be clicked, I guess. a pop-up on level 1 when it first happens wouldn't hurt though.

I'll make an update fixing the score problem and with a tutorial indicating what the village button in the lower right corner is for.
