Game not saving progress?

I may be completely to blame here, but I cannot figure out how to save my progress in this game. There was no option to Save, so I have just exited as if it were any other GTA-style game. When I came back into the game, there was no "continue" option.

What am i doing wrong?

The game auto saves at various checkpoints. For instance, when you go through a building door, when you solve a riddler challenge or trophy, when you burst the joker balloons or destroy a camera. Look for an icon at the bottom right of your screen which shows when it's saving. You can't manually save.

When you want to play again, click on the save slot when the main menu comes up. If you press escape during the game, but don't quit, another menu has a resume game button.

I ignored the Games for Windows Live sign-up up at first, played for two hours, quit, and returned the next day to find no save games. Some googling about seems to confirm you need GFWL to have a save profile:

I THINK YOU SHOOT THE BALOON TO SAVE GAMES OR AUTO SAVE IS FINE :)

Shooting balloons does trigger a save but it isnt needed to actually save your game... its suposed to happen automatically at key intervals. Are you using Windows 8 by any chance? theres a save bug that seems to only effect W8 that I'm trying to work through right now. It seems to be a compatibility problem with GWL and windows 8 but I dont know.
