after the counter spam thing you do a beatdown then continue the fight till he's defeated. It should be prompting you on screen.

A beatdown is when you cape stun him and proceed to beat the ♥♥♥♥ of him? Well, I do this after the counter thing... even when I get to a combo of x79 and then give him breathing space he immediately disappears and comes at me again with the sword strikes.

I've just done the beatdown on him for the sixth time... and he disappeared and then reappeared in the middle of fight area floating cross legged in front of his giant lazarus pet, where they both do nothing...

It would help if you could be a bit more specific as to what is happening. I know you are trying but what part of the fight are you stuck on exactly? He should have a health bar if I'm not mistaken, right? You just have to deal with all the stages as they come. Defeat the sand clone things, beat him following the quick time event-like scenario with rapid counters, mash the counter button when all the clones appear and use the quick electrical pulse shooter when he has that giant form and fires blades and shuriken things at you. Eventually you should be getting his health down and the fight should end.

I defeat his giant sand form with rapid-fire electric pulses, he leaps at me with multiple blade strikes which I counter, I cape stun him and start a beatdown, he disappears and reappears in the middle of the fight area, he floats in the air cross-legged whereupon his giant sand form reappears behind him and just does nothing

If the giant sand form is doing nothing at all then I think you are encountering a bug. I'm not sure what will fix it. I've seen some people mention another bug during this fight and the solution for that was to turn of DX 11 settings if you are running it and crank the graphic detail down to medium. It might help, but again, that fix is for another bug that happens during the fight (I can't be too specific cause of spoilers since there is something plot related that happens in relation to this bug). I hope that that helps...

Resurrecting this old thread to see if a fix was ever found. I'm getting the exact same issue as OP and have tried every fix I can think of/find and nothing helps. He just sits there floating endlessly.

Many bad checkpoint bugs are related to running the game with screen resolution maxed out. Doesn't affect everyone's rig but happens often enough to get documented. First, both patch and verify the game:
1. Select game in Library, right-click Properties > Updates, choose Automatic Updating.
2. Select game in Library, right-click Properties > Local Files, Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

Open your Launcher > Settings and do the following: Disable any DirectX effects; reduce screen resolution from maximum; and disable PhysX, scroll down to last item. Then restart your computer before testing the game and this boss fight. Let us know your results.

You might want to test the resolution change elsewhere in the game before you actually get to the boss fight, perhaps from inside the challenge maps.

Tried everything you suggested, all settings as low as possible along with 480p resolution. PhysX off too. Tried reinstalling as well and no change, he still gets stuck. Have also tried Win7&8 compatibility mode.

You don't need to go as low as 480, just get it somewhere between 720 and below maximum. At this point, reducing settings doesn't always work because you don't know there's a problem until it's too late, after you're already too far into the game.
