I like this game. I don't think it's amazing, it's just good fun and it's different. But a worthy addition to the LOK universe it is not. And you could argue all day that it's not trying to be, but considering LOK fans haven't seen a game in a very long time, and then this comes out instead of a new one, it's not unreasonable to be a little frustrated.
Starting a whole new game with its own mythos would be way harder to both create and sell though. I have to agree that this game could potentially be the reason a new LoK game is made due to not only fans showing their existance but also new potential fans that could be interested in a new single player version in that universe.
the problem with that is its not the LoK fans that will be playing this. it will be the douchebag multiplayer elite that will play this. as i said starting this. i want a REAL LoK game. it doesn't need multiplayer. no game has ever "needed" multiuplayer. it was just a way for companies to skimp the ♥♥♥♥ out of actual game design and doing real work just so they could sell something that thousands of people just kill eachother in over and over for no reason. yet those same "gamers" which they arn't at all. gripe about rpg's being repeditive.. seriously there isn't an online battle game that isn't repetitive.
Firstly, it's not five versus five. It's four versus four.
Second, LoK has no real chance in the modern market unless the developers got a huge amount of funding for the project to pull off something amazing. So it's not a waste of a "licens" at all. Infact it'll rekindle interest in the series including bringing revenue in to make an actual LoK game.
If there's no interest or avaliable funding, then a sequal to LoK Defiance will likely never happen. That's just the sad reality of the world we live in.
So as a TL;DR this game could possibly reestablish the series and maybe lead to a new "traditional" LoK game.
In actuality I fully enjoy what the game brings to the table and it can't be called anything other then a benefit to a series that was sadly falling into obscurity.
Even if they made a new game to pick up where the LOK series left off, there would still be many people who haven't heard of the series before and can't even play the first game to get started with it. I realize they could still do that now though, and I'm hoping they do. The market is actually very good for 2D Zelda style games atm. I think people who have never played an LOK game would love Blood Omen.
