You cant believe everything you hear :)
Also there was a problem of not being able to switch pilots. Hotfix 2 fixes that, so you can switch pilots now.
whereas you yourself can just equip something you have no stock off and it automatically gets bought.

I've been playing co-op with my son, and the guest is able to buy mechs, customize, purchase weapons, level up pilots and chassis, etc.
IMO the guest has too much control :-)
Only bug in customization I remember is when assigning fire groups, they were not sticking, I had to redo it when mission starts.
