I think you misunderstand, I am not disagreeing with you. I am merely pointing out that the game does it several times, but one that particular time I did not mind.
Without spoiling it, in a particular mission you have to protect a mech and regardless of the state the opponent is in, the outcome is the same. This is in your favor, because no matter how good you are, that NPC is not going into that fight fresh.
The Trial of Position is really dumb, because if you only get 1 kill and die, you lose the game. If you get 2, the game refuses to let you go for 3. Personally, I think they should have just made #3 the low blow you are expecting and that would have at least solved both problems (the 3rd kill and that other character).
