Best way to use merit points?
Title.

Just wondering what your advice is on how to spend the merit points? on the scientists, research or repairs? or if there's another option please say.

First priority is salvage. I'd try to increase it by at least 2 or 3 each time you get a level up. You'll end up with an excess of salvage parts early on, but later research can get pricy.

Another early priority is 4-5 techs. Maybe increase their efficiency by a point or two once you start getting heavy mechs but you really don't need to max it out. Worst comes to worst you can just buy replacement mechs. Kerenskies are the only currency that is basically never in short supply.

Long term your main focus should be dumping everything into scientists and upgrading the lab. Get to 10 scientists and then split the difference between upgrading the lab and recruiting more. Each lab upgrade gives a +1 for each scientist so it can start to snowball fast once you start dedicating all/most of your merit to them, which in my case was right around the time I finished Santandar.

Any tips on which components to keep? mech vs weapon vs equipment

All three are needed since most research (especially most higher tier research) requires all three.

That said mech components are always important and they show up in the lowest amounts. Their 'primary' use is to unlock the armour and structure improvements. These are also the most expensive research trees.

Weapons are probably the next biggest since weapon upgrades will lean more into weapon components than equipment.

The main research tree that focus' on equipment is heat management.
+1 to prioritize salvage.

Is tempting to upgrade or get more technicians for repairs (I did that and regret it lol) so is 'cheaper' to buy a second mech than to spend merits on techs.

And also remember to always have something being researched, you can re-arrange the research queue to your liking.

I spread them across the board. Techs, scientists and salvage. You can only have 5 techs working on each mech, so 25 techs enough. Salvage is important but so is science. If you don't keep up in certain areas like lazers and sensors, it will make life difficult. Pretty much what the first post said. Don't forget to unlock new mechs you need some too.

If you laserboat your way into midgame/lategame you barely need any science until midgame to be honest. Same for mech unlocks.

Get max salvage ASAP. Unlock the NOVA, Timberwolf, Warhawk, and Direwolf when they are available. You can get by just fine with literally only those mechs.

Once you get level 3 for armor, structural resistance and heat, scientist aren't become that important.
