How does this differ from the other Mechwarrior 5 stuff?
I'm still unsure if I need to buy this on the same platform I have my other Mechwarrior 5 stuff (Epic), and what this is compared to that content.

MechWarrior 5: Clans is better than Mercenaries. Firstly, it features a story-driven campaign that allows you to choose which side to align with either the Wolf Dragoons or remain loyal to your unit as the game progresses.

The soundtrack is phenomenal, paying direct homage to Mech Warrior 2 and 3. The cutscenes are pre-rendered, offering a more dynamic experience, rather than "static characters." You also have the option to purchase "Mech Points" to upgrade your StarMate skills and enhance your Mech.

Best campaign in the series since MechWarrior 4: Vengeance.

It's not warcraft where you choose sides.

But the game itself is like a tutorial to an online game.

Err most of that is true, but you only side with either side about 5-6 missions from the end of the game

It is standalone. I own Mercs on Epic, Clans on Steam.

It's a story campaign (~20-25hrs) with all hand crafted maps ( + you can replay previous missions as well)

First game based on The Clans in almost 30yrs, and they stayed very loyal to the lore

I enjoy Clans more than Mercs, others are the opposite. Hand crafted maps vs Mercs Random Tiles that all feel the same after the first dozenish times dropping. Mercs has you owning a Private Mercenary Company, whilst Clans has you as a fresh Mechwarrior in an army

Clans uses Clan Omnimechs which are more customisable than their Inner Sphere Battlemechs cousins. Omnimechs can change available weapon hardpoints via Omnipods, but have some locked equipment that cant be altered, so while there are only 16 base chassis, the large number of variations you can make more than makes up for it

I have 5 kit Fox mechs since kit Fox can do everything.

IDK to me it's like "Advanced Mechassault" - which ain't a bad thing, but it's a very different thing from MW5. They haven't made a Mechassault game since XBOX OG, so I welcome it. It's like a MA mod for MW5.

Heat barely matters, range barely matters, mash shoot button. IS mechs explode quickly, which is why they send like 100 of them at you per mission, and you still come out the other side with 70% health remaining.

Clan omnimechs are more like Gundam tech than grimdark battletech IS junk. It shows mightily. People ♥♥♥♥♥ "well, there are only like 16 mechs" but they don't consider that each mech is FIVE versions of it via Omnipods, where you can mix and match and cook your own variant however you want. So it's 16 x 5 sets x 4 pod locations, which is variety enough to do anything you want.

Nobody is really talking about the massive change to campaign structure either. You have 5 days between combat drops. You have a limited number of technicians who can repair a certain number of damage points per day. Thus you will have to upgrade your techs and facilities, or end up taking damaged mechs into the next mission. Also, there's a perk system but you have to spend salvage and points on research projects. This gives "Weapon type + range, + cooldown, + heat reduction" stuff. Using the mechs themselves gives XP points to spend specific to that mech to make it walk faster, turn faster, etc.

There is no "wait until my stuff is ready", the timeline moves on and forces you into a drop however your mechs and tech are. That's ok, because this is an invasion and nobody is going to sit around a month waiting on your mech to get fixed.

It's just a very different thing than MW5.

It's not better, it's different. Variety does not matter with borked balance and 2-dimensional missions.

Mercenaries has more player freedom and variety, but at the expense of a cohesive narrative. If you just want to play around with big stompy robots, Mercenaries is probably more your speed. If you want a experience a narrative and dive deeper into the BattleTech setting, you'll probably want Clans instead. I like both of them, but it's really a matter of what you personally prefer.

Missions are similar to MW5 Mercs but that's where the similarities end.

The missions are very linear but maps are large and very well designed so they're typically a lot more interesting and unique than in Mercs.

The story is substantially deeper and connects well with canon timeline, characters and events. There are lots of voice-acted characters that look awesome and are far more fleshed out than in Mercs.

The graphics are significantly improved as is the gameplay, especially with the top-view map allowing you to coordinate your star.

There are high quality cinematics between each mission that drives the story.

Customisation is different. Not only do you get to modify your mechs but you can upgrade lots of their stats as well as the stats of your team mates. Each team mate has different qualities which means you need to design their mechs accordingly. You also have a research team that you can use to improve most aspects of your mechs including weapons, equipment and durability.

The main downside is you get no control over where your team travels and what your missions are (apart from the order you do them and a little surprise near the end - which is a real nice touch).

The game is great - I was replaying Mercs and moved straight onto Clans. I'm now playing through a second time in Expert mode. Looking forward to future DLC/expansions.

Most here will tell you MW Clans is better because your on a MW Clans forum not MW5. If you ask the same question over there you will have different results. Your best bet OP is to watch a YT video of it and decide yourself.

nope mercs as it is nowadays is wayyy better. thanks to updates, bugfixes and most importantly mods...

but since you are only here to advertise the game you will not mention that :-)

the story driven campaign is okay, it lacks a bit of depth and the ending is retarded. After the campaign is over you basically cant do anything anymore except replay the campaign... As the game lacks a sandbox mode (and will likely never receive one)

The soundtrack is pretty good, i agree. way better than mercs... they really stuffed that one up with mercs.

The pre-rendered cutscenes are really good though, pretty much the only thing PGI seems to have spend major money for...

What the shill above has not mentioned is that there was zero bugfixing and quality control until release. Game performance is atrocious due to complete lack of any optimization of the code. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of bugs, some gamebreaking for some.

PGI are rushing out hotfixes that only seem to fix half the issues and make others worse.

Currently your best bet is to wait until at least DLC1 when PGI have maybe have gotten their act together. And then only buy when its on sale. In its current state it is absolutely not worth full price. Which is a shame, this could have been a great game upon release. But incompetent devs and their management ♥♥♥♥♥♥ it up unnecessarily

One other thing I forgot to mention is that the environment is linear and not open-world, like MW5: Mercenaries. Each stage has its style, you'll be fighting in Urban Cities, Snowfield, Spaceports, Shipdocks, Palace and Forest. Mercenaries' environments are randomly generated and sometimes look like a giant sandbox. For people who say the graphics don't look good are blind, you could see details in the clouds like flying birds, Dropships taking off and gun cannons shooting at other objects.

I just wish Piranha Games could add some Infantry Troopers on some levels to make it feel more immersive.
