But if you want to play as a Honorable Clansman and looking for more of a story driven game then Clans is the right choice. Not to mention their mechs are so much cooler looking than that IS junk... err mechs I mean.
Just be aware there are a LOT of bugs in the game at the moment including some that literally stop you from progressing. There will be fixes for them of course but if you're wanting to play a MW game now I would say Mercs. If you're happy to wait until Clans get fixed then Clans
On the other hand, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries may have older graphics, but the battles feel more intense and piloting a mech feels more realistic. You have to manage your income, maintain your mechs, and decide which faction to align with as a mercenary. It can be really challenging if you don’t plan well, especially if you run out of funds. There are also a lot more mechs available to use.
Both games have their strengths and weaknesses, and they differ significantly in terms of gameplay mechanics. Mercenaries offers more replayability with its open-ended structure, though some missions do start to feel repetitive after a while. Meanwhile, Clans is more focused on a linear story experience with great cutscenes and storytelling. In Clans, missions often involve taking down one mech after another, but the narrative makes it feel worthwhile.
MW5 Mercs is an open world game with a lightly scripted campaign
Clans has the better campaign, but you're gonna play Mercs way more just by the game design, especially considering the mods for the game.
It's not even close. MW5:Clans crashes so so much for me. It is incredibly frustrating.
Clans is a story driven 'mech game. Mercs is a 'Mech game of a 'mech game. It's about the 'mechs and collecting them all and getting all the good toys. Clans has you plow through bland wave after bland wave in the name of a story. Mercs is bland wave after bland wave in the name of collection. As a game mechanic it's just more fun.
If you are looking for a more open ended sandbox game with lots of DLC that enhance it (as well as countless mods), then MERCS is good. Downside is the campaign is a bit lackluster by comparison but there is plenty to do even after you finish the campaign.
IMO implementing Clan invasion within Mercs would have been much better. I'd even pay the same price as for the game. But still respect to devs for trying to make a decent story driven MW game.
Mercs is a decent game if you get all the DLC's, which have some pretty good campaigns. Otherwise, get ready for A LOT of repetitive missions and a lot of grinding too. Without the DLC's the open world of Mercenaries is vast, but mostly empty.
To be clear, I think both are must haves and both offer something different. For my money, Clans is worth full price for a fairly lengthy and cool campaign while Mercs is better picked up in a sale with all the DLC for cheap. That's just my opinion.
Ultimately I think I prefer Mercenaries given that I much prefer the freedom of being able to make my own way in the game instead of being forced to follow a set path.
