The Timber Wolf is what it's actually called by the folks who actually made it (Clan Wolf). Madcat is what happened when an IS targeting computer didn't recognize it and ended up confused calling it a Marauder and a Catapult.

though, here in PGI land, in MWO they've used "mad cat" for the heavy version of the chassis, while the assault version retains the name "timber wolf"

I see! Yeah before I got into mechwarrior, which happened like about a week ago, I loved the MechAssault games for OG Xbox and there were 2 there. MadCat & TimberWolf. Gotta admit I love Mechwarrior 5 Mercs. It brought back so much nostalgia that I'm waiting for the dlc to go on sale now. I'm enjoying Clans too, but it feels more arcady compared to Mercs. At least the mech movement does.

Nah. Timber Wolf is the original clan name of the first gen mech. Mad Cat is its IS designation.
Mad Cat mk II is a clan Diamond Sharks creation made for both their personal use and wider market. They were basicaly banking on the name to get more sells, since they are also selling it to IS. And it is assault battlemech instead of heavy omni.
Both you can find in MWO.

To go further they had created Mad Cat mk III too as a medium companion mech for Mad Cat mk II at later date.
And the latest of the line is Mad Cat mk IV that is a modern revamp of original Timber Wolf with all the latest tech. And that one also had earned its own clan name - Savage Wolf, as it is super popular premium omnimech.

Alot of the clanner mech have 2 names, there original Clan name and the name designation the Inner Sphere gave those mech when they first encounter them since they had no idea what the mech was.

Its similar to NATO name desgination to USSR Soviet stuff in real life, the Mi-24 Attack helicoper was designated Hind by NATO.
