No Career Mode? No Thanks PGI
Been an avid MW fan since MW2. Story driven content is great and all....used to be the thing. But thats for console kiddies now. This is PC.

I played MWO (MechWarrior Online) for years freelancing around. Hairbrained Schemes RTS Battletech was phenomenal. I enjoyed MW5 Mercenaries as well.

Know what they all had in common?

A Career Mode / Sandbox experience.

I dont know who all these people were asking for a "narrative campaign" story without any sandbox elements - but I cant believe they are real BattleTech fans. Why would anyone want to ditch an open-ended sandbox Career mode with hours upon hours of gameplay potential, making your own mark in the Galaxy travelling and fighting whoever you want...in favor of a structured narrative where youre stuck with a pre-developed concept?

That is lame.

If the game releases without a career mode itll be the first MW game I havent bought for decades. I'll stick to replaying HBS's Battletech or Mercs, or just the pen and paper with my miniatures.

Why write such a sheet of whining if nothing will change from your opinion, whether you like it or not. And the game is actually ready and the fact that it will be linear was initially known. Not everyone likes sandbox games with a waste of time, a lot of people are waiting for linear campaigns and which have not been around for a long time since MW4, and about Clans since MW2. There was no such game with a cinematograph, cut scenes, dialogues at all. And such an epic atmosphere can only be conveyed in a linear campaign, not in a career.

You do realize this means more Mechwarrior games right? One of the things the owners of BattleTech realized is that they have all of these amazing stories in print just collecting dust since they've been written. What they then thought it you could take all these awesome stories and make them into Mechwarrior and BattleTech video games.

Do you know what that means? More exposure of the franchise, more people into BattleTech, into Mechwarrior, etc. Yet because there isn't a necessarily a sandbox your going to poopoo it along with all future story games that can bring more people in just because "story games are for console kiddies." My man, have you EVER played the original Homeworld? Go play it and tell me it's for kiddies and that includes Homeworld Cataclysm (emergence)

The problem with the story is once you've played it... you've played it. I'm with Blakhart. The sandbox campaign is what keeps bringing me back to Battletech and Mechwarrior 5. I've been waiting to fight off the clan invasion in my campaign and was hoping for a system where planets could really change hands and borders could shift dynamically... This was kind of a disappointment.

Both your points are valid. That's why we have the sandbox MW5:Mercs and the linear MW5:Clans. Some people will want a make-your-mark type of game with you in charge of everything, so they have Mercs and HBS BTech to enjoy. Others will want a more linear, story-driven campaign-type game, so they have Clans to look forward to. Personally, I enjoyed gallivanting around the Inner Sphere on my Leopard (but honestly I'd prefer having a Union and a full Merc company that MW4:Mercs NEARLY gave me) but I also enjoyed the more linear DLCs. It really wouldn't be much of a stand-alone game if Clans behaved just like Mercs so a different format is actually refreshing. Nobody's going to force anybody to buy another MW5 game if they don't feel like it, but let's be happy for those who are getting the linear gameplay they wanted because the sandbox people got their game first.

No one will make two games in one, it's very expensive. And everywhere, from the reviews of the demo version, the description of the game and the interview with Russ Bullack, to PC Gamer magazine that fall, it was said that there would be no more careers with procedurally generated missions. Only a linear campaign and this is the only way to convey the plot, the stories in the campaign. It's like a book, a movie. A lot of emotions and impressions)).

It sounds to me like both groups of humans are getting one game for their particular wants. Sounds fair to me. As the guy who prefers linear story based HAND CRAFTED content, I feel like you're just upset that some games aren't directly made for YOU IN PARTICULAR. That sounds like being an entitled cry baby to me. Which I'm sure you're not, I'm not actually trying to disrespect or demean you. I think you actually don't hear yourself, don't hear how entitled you sound, and don't hear how bad it sounds to begrudge other people getting the game they most want when you already got the game you most want. That's *fair*. That is balanced. And again, I'm here to point these things out to you, not to hurt you or make you feel or look bad. I honestly think you don't see it from other peoples perspective. You see a thing being not the way you want it to be, not a thing that WAS the way you wanted it to be and is now giving that to someone else. Because humans? We suck at empathy. We suck at actually seeing things objectively, or seeing them subjectively through someone elses eyes. Unless we're trained not to, we only see what will or won't makeu us happy, and that's the behavior I'm witnessing here. So, consider this a friendly well meaning nudge that maybe other people want this change and that balance is being served by this.

The lack of real story content and scripted missions is my biggest complaint about the Mercenaries sub franchise. Which, yes, if you've played older Mechwarrior games you'd know that Mechwarrior Mercenaries is it's own sub series within the series. Personally, I'd prefer to play as someone like Theodore Korita, or Wolf. Both have real history, great stories, and match up with the time period. But we can't all have exactly to a T what we want. I will, however, be happy playing through a scripted campaign of the Clans Invasion. Crush those filthy House scum.

I've said about this and talk about it to my friends.... also going to avoid buying this game IF THEY ONLY include story / linear game play. I was hopping they will do a U-turn and include sandbox career mode like MW5: Merc.

I feel the same way, but many people like linear campaigns and that's fine. Let's just hope they keep developing MechWarrior 5 so we can have our free-form Career mode.

For those of you who is saying "bye and don't forget to close the door", the bunch of you are crazy or don't even care to read properly. So let me tell you this...

The Career Mode + Modding is what keeps the game alive! If you think Story Mode is enough then prepare to see the game die and forget. Linear focus game-play is a WASTE of time!!

If you don't understand this small request which most of us would like to see, then all of you are greedy and ***** as hell bent! Enough is enough for all of you "ok bye, get gud and sorry but not sorry elite entitle gamer!"

At the end of the day, Mech Warrior 5 is good. But Making the 'Clans' contents and putting it on its own is like slapping many of the fans who is already loving Mech Warrior 5: Merc. But telling us to get out is a no. Linear isn't the way to go. They need add career mode or else, as I said it... it will die out sooner or later.

Oof just saw this. They messed up coop in MW5 Mercs badly and me and people i play with have to use mods just to get a decent amount out of it. I know there are people who are fine waiting on their friend edit their mech for 20 minutes while they wait or watch their stream but most of the people i talk and play with are not them. To see them not include sandbox in this new one is sad to see. I get that some people are fine with this but i hope it won't hurt the franchise.

It doesn't hurt, there used to be games with linear campaigns and that didn't stop them from being successful and popular.
