I would love to be proven wrong but I doubt Clans will improve over Mercs in this department.
It is a shame because I had a blast using my X52 Pro the last time I played MechWarrior 4.
I meant cockpit sim in the sense of "a game played primarily from the cockpit" rather than a DCS-style interactive cockpit experience.
What I'm asking for is just a more convenient way to set up hotas controls. MW5 Mercs can be played with a full hotas, even without any mods. You can configure basically any controller to work, but you have to define them in code in a config file outside the game.
I play it right now with a stick, throttle, and pedals. (With the VR mod, you even have fully realised cockpits with all the UI integrated into the panels, rather than floating around you. It's absolutely fantastic.)
Editing the config file is the official way to set up hotas controls, but it's awful. It takes forever to get right, and is very trial and error if you have anything other than the most common joystick. Every other cockpit game in the world has a simple in-game way to select and configure controllers, without having to edit config files. From star wars squadrons all the way to DCS, you are able to see your usb controllers in game.
Even star citizen has had a pretty decent controller config menu for like 10 years now.
I think people neither play MWO nor MW5 with a HOTAS. Frankly, I even don't although I started with a HOTAS way back in MWO. But it is not really practical to be honest.
So I guess for a very few, it's not really worth balancing this towards stick and throttle inputs (which you must, otherwise people are whining).
This.
I used a Joystick all through MW4 Vengeance/Mercenaries back in the day and was way better with those versus mouse and keyboard. But for some reason, new gen MW games just dont feel right with a joystick. Much better on M/K
