Be a nice change of pace to play the Not-Named Clan during their Trial of Annihillation.
You know, when I was a kid, playing Mechwarrior 2... I liked Wolf better than Falcon. Jade Falcon felt like over the top comic book villains, while Wolf felt like generic, uninteresting good guys.
Then I started reading up on the lore and realized how lazily written and boring Wolf actually is. They are shoehorned into the "protagonist" role constantly, they have "plot armor," and never seem to face consequences for their actions. The Clans are a pretty terrible society in the lore, and Wolf is somehow given a "get out of jail for free" card.
Frankly, I'm looking forward to playing as the "Bad Guys"... and make no mistake, Smoke Jag definitely fills that role. They are like the House Liao of the Clans, but worse. The invasion of the Inner Sphere, begins and ultimately ends with Smoke Jaguar and its destruction. Poetic justice... dire consequences for their actions in instigating the invasion... and the player will be in a position to experience that arc... riches to rags... if PGI has the guts and writing chops.
Two words: Ayden. Pryde.
Terrible? Are you kidding? I'd take life in any of the Clanner castes over the Inner Sphere any day of the week. You're not getting freedom in any case - even in Davion (which is just as bad and probably worse than Wolf as far as Plot-armour goody-goody), why not live where the castes are clearly defined, and war is highly regulated and ritualistic.
Civilian war casualties per capita in the Clans were almost certainly microscopic from 2786 [Pentagon Worlds founding] to 3049 compared to the Inner Sphere during the same time period. They didn't even kill the Not-Named Clan's civilians. Drink that in while you ponder the Kentares Massacre.
Clans > IS
Wolf don't have that. Wolf are just the best Clan who are way smarter than everyone else and way better fighters than everyone else and always win. Reading about them is boring because you know they're going to win at everything no matter what. The only time they had a major loss it got instantly reversed and actually left them in a stronger position than they were before.
Also, Aidan is the main character of his novels, and it's normal for main characters in stories to get special treatment by the universe to keep the story going. Wolf aren't the main character of Battletech. Or maybe they are and we've been approaching the setting incorrectly all this time? Maybe it is meant to be "the adventures of Clan Wolf as they dominate some losers". Might actually be on to something there.
You absolutely are getting freedom. You are getting the freedom to have a family, you have the freedom to worship whatever your heart demands that you worship, you have the freedom for most people to find things in your own life that you want to do, things that you enjoy. You have the freedom to grow old, where the state will not just let you die because you are inefficient, for an average person in the Houses, they will receive some measure of life-extending medical care because despite all their faults the Houses are not Anti-Human, they are Human to a fault
Accusing House Davion of having plot armor would've held up, maybe in the 90s. Clan Wolf has had Plot Armor for 30 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ years
Yes yes, their commitment to not being wasteful is commendable, even if the thing they are trying not to waste is their slaves.
have you considered that huh
