It's almost funny now but in 1999 I took a high paying job at a young age(got super lucky) and moved into my first apartment without roomates. I had just previously discovered TF and was playing on an out of date computer on dial up. Of course now that I had the money I bought a top of the line Dell(best at the time) with a Pentium III for $3500 or something ridiculous and cable internet for $100/month. Only businesses had that at the time. It was awesome. I neglected my beautfiul 19 year old girlfriend. I spent my nights playing and would get up early just to play in the morning before work. After a 12 hour work day I would meet friends for some drinks but would find myself peeling away early to go home and play. It actually became a problem. I was calling in sick at least twice a month to play more. Sometimes once a week. I was really into Ultima Online a couple of years earlier, but I was just 17 or 18 then and living at home. It wasn't a big deal and certainly not like this. Full blow addiction. I let it ruin my life for a year.
Lost the girl, job, car apartment and even computer. Huge wake up call for me. Now I know I have an addictive personality and can't go all in like that anymore. But it gives you an idea of just how groundbreaking the game was at the time. It was like paintball that you could play at any moment and without the downtime between matches. The euphoria from dominating a match back then just doesn't come close to the already impressive buzz you can get from COD or TF2 matches. Nothing else like it was around really. Quake was good but didn't have the team play aspect.
TF classic all day, all night, forever.
(I LOVE TF2 as well and played it for years. It is good in it's own right and deserves it's place as the current standard. Let's just all wait for TF3. Hopefully I will be retired and my home paid for by then. My wife may still leave...)
* My brand new "luxury" car lease didn't cost as much as my computer and internet bill each month. CRAZY
10 is better than 9
Impressive either way. Also,
different times?
Better play Half-life or UT99 if you want old-school, there are more players and you're not stuck on 2fort full of noob-intolerant vets on some americans servers all day
funny guy, that's your problem if you want to play with a ping aroun 120/160, you can not deny the only one populated server is not european
