have you ever considered race levels the concept thought simple . developing it will probably be much harder . its basically a timed area that have some special locks that only stay unlocked if you get there in time. or a new timed switch which has a limited timer to open areas up then close when the time runs out. just some ideas i have some good ones sometimes but i will forget if i do not comment now so i hope you take them into consideration
