Oof, so much hate
I wanted to write this as a review, but it didnt seem possible, so this is going in discussions.

I'm probably about a third of the way through the game, and while I can relate to frustrations over some of the physical gameplay aspects like combat mechanics and bugs, I dont know why it's getting so much hate. (I saw one person basically complaining that the game became too woke, but so was the OG game.) TBH, many of these things actually give it the vibe of an older game, which I think is appropriate for a prequel.

I honestly couldnt give a crap about graphics. I've been gaming since the 90's. The scenery in this game is lovely, and the character animations and graphics arent perfect. I am unbothered by this. Flawless animation was just never something I expect from a game and it's also far from the reason I play games.

In the beginning I tore my hair out a little trying to figure out how to do things that the tutorials failed to instruct me on how to do. This was the only thing that actively interrupted my immersion in the story at the beginning. The combat system feels clunky in some ways that I am certain werent intended. Its obvious that this was meant to be a tactics heavy combat system, but for the life of me I cant get everyone to cooperate in tandem and do the things I tell them to do *when* I tell them to do it. But I got the hang of it anyway, warts and all. But it's still definitely Greedfall, so if you liked Greedfall for the story and theme and narrative execution, I dont think you're going to be disappointed. You just have to get used to a new combat system, and chuckle occasionally when the body of a glitching peasant floats in mid air down the street.

To me, what matters in a game is whether the story is executed well, and whether it's consistent with past games in quality, writing style, core themes, and plot, and whether I am interested enough in the characters to care about talking to them. Which Greedfall 2 seems to be doing well at so far. I can get used to any less important, ambient quirks. It's a narratively solid follow up so far, and while it's a little buggy and I'm not a huge fan of the combat mechanics, what else is new? I always find it hard to adjust to new mechanics and game systems, especially if they take longer than usual to become intuitive.

If you require dopamine-generating physics and sound effects during combat to stay engaged, this might be a struggle for you. But to me that's fine because greedfall was always more than combat for me, so if that aspect changed, I can deal.

I finished the EA yesterday, and I can say I really enjoyed Greedfall 2, I think so far the companions are very interesting, the voice acting is really good, the story so far I enjoyed, the combat is cool especially if you like The Dragon Age combat (not Veilguard) So you understand I'm very used to see different combat in every game (and btw Dragon Age 2 is my favourite DA and favourite regarding the combat) does that mean I dislike the Origins combat? No. Actually its one of the things I enjoy more of that game.

There are some bugs (obviouly its a EA game) there is a part with the monkeys where they stop attacking you (outside Uxantis) but nothing that make the game Impossible to play.

I can't wait for the full release of Greedfall 2 !

Well... that's a pretty good summary of why all the hate.

Changing an action combat to it's polar opposite when your whole audience is built exclusively upon action combat for the past 10 years tends to do that. Naturally a lot of the people who liked the original for what it was will not look kindly on that.

Dragon Age fans of all people should know that's not a nice thing to do. Even most of the people making up excuses for this don't really actually like the combat which is particularly telling.

And it's not like combat is some side content you can easily ignore to focus on the rest. There are pretty combat heavy games. And the rest is just not good enough on it's own to carry such a massive flaw.
